Large room, not busy, set in gardens. The futons and mattress were comfortable. We really enjoyed the dinner and the enthusiasm of the server. The price was lower than other similar properties in the Kiso Valley, probably because it is a few kilometres off the main road. We enjoyed our time there.
Minshuku Suhara is located in Okuwa, just 12 miles from Kotoku-ji Temple and 12 miles from Sekibutsu Kanzan Jittoku Statue.

Wonderful to stay in a traditional old wooden house, but with modern conveniences. Futon was comfortable, fully equiped kitchen, the bathroom had a cedar bath which took a while to fill up - but worth it! Traditional foyer and an irori (open fire place- not in use though!) in "lounge room" were wonderful, as were the wooden stairs to second floor rooms and the high roof. I was a solo traveller, so I didn't use the top floor.
I enjoyed my 2 night stay.
This is a fabulous place for people wanting to get away from the typical tourist places. The small town is both traditional in areas, and "modern" in others. A Japanese restaurant (not open every day) and a Chinese restaurant are within walking distance, as are 2 convenience stores. It is also walking distance to the station. ( I travelled from Nagoya and then moved on to Matsumoto.)
You can easily do day trips to Tsumago, Narai and walk parts of the Nakasendo (as I did) - just check the train time tables in advance!
Heating is room specific, so if you're there in winter it can be a bit cold in rarely used rooms - like kitchen or toilet. There are heaters in every room, but as one person - I thought that was a waste of power, so I'd just put my puffer coat on outside the main room I used.
I would definitely stay here again if I'm back in the area.
