The place is perfect for nature lovers. We stayed around Chuzenji lake during late fall and it was still gorgeous. Supposedly planned to hike Mt. Nantai but we failed to check it was already off-season by the time we got there. Make sure to bring cash around as most do not accept cash. Also, only a few restos operate past 8pm so plan ahead. No konbini too, just one grocery store.

we booked for 2 nights - we arrived at noon. stayed the night and then did all the tourist things again the next day - get to the Toshogu Shrine and Shinkyo Bridge early!
We booked a car so it was much easier to get around than by bus. We were able to easily get to the falls and Chuzenji Lake.
Nothing is open at night - beware - get your dinner at lunch time and put it aside. There's always Lawson :)
As we had done everything on the second day, we would have preferred to make our way back to Tokyo early in the evening on our 2nd night stay but couldn't change the booking so the next day was a little wasted travelling back - Would have preferred to wake up in Tokyo and have a full day

Amazing National Park-- beautiful fall colors and waterfalls. Loved walking around the shrines, temples, gardens, and along the moss covered pathways with the stone statues. Easy train transportation to get there from Tokyo, and easy bus transport once there. We didn't feel like we needed to rent a car. I definitely would like to go back!

Nikko is a great trip to do from Tokyo.
Nikko is a great trip to do from Tokyo. We spent two nights and feel like that was a good amount of time. We were lucky to be there for the fall leaf season, however this did make it more crowded. We were happy we went up to the lake and took the bus around it to different waterfalls and onsens.

We enjoyed visiting the historical sites, like the temples and shrines and the summer residence of the former emperors but we especially loved our 5km hike along the river, with its rushing waters, waterfalls and many Jizu along the way.

We stayed at Sanga Nikko one night. The hotel is really nice with classic Japanese rooms. We found the beds cozy and the hotel very clean. It is also really important to mention the kindness and the availability of the owner (and he speaks a very good English!). He was so kind to give us a ride at the station with all the luggage and made us use the kitchen even after the check out. So I definitely suggest to go here!
Very nice hotel with lots if amenities to make your stay comfortable. Great beds. Very helpful and friendly staff at the front desk. There is no restaurant but there is a small shop and a dining area with ovens to heat up your meal if you like. And free coffee, tea or miso soup.
Perfect and very quiet location for discovering the Nikko area. We had a car but if you’re on foot its a bit out of the way.
I enjoyed my stay in this place. I would highly recommend it. The staff was very friendly. The private onsen was amazing. There are no restaurants nearby to have dinner, but the hotel would provide free transportation service to the restaurants in Nikko.
The hotel is 45 minutes away from Nikko, so booking.com is wrong recommending it for that destination. Ground floor is old but OK. The upstairs amenities should have been renovated 20’yeqrs ago. It is old, smelly, dirty and moldy. Horrid
