Ski areas vary considerably in the area. Akakura Onsen has absolutely the worst lifts i have experienced in Japan. When they weren't broken down they were extremely slow.
On the other hand Suginohara has a new gondola and modern 'high' speed lifts. This was the pick of the mountains to ski for me.

Myokokogen is a great spot for skiing and snowboarding.
Myokokogen is a great spot for skiing and snowboarding. Most hotels come with their own onsens.
As for ski resorts, Suginohara has more advanced terrain, followed by Akakura Kanko (top part), Ikenotaira Alpen Blick and finally Akakura Onsen. Seki onsen is a small but great option on deep powder days. Lotte Arai (advanced terrain) is a 30-min drive from Akakura onsen.
As for apres ski, Akakura Onsen is the only option. Lots of restaurants and bars on the main street. Sekigawa (Ikenotaira area) and Suginosawa (Suginohara area) are quite sleepy, and deserted at times.

We went to Myoko for the snow and we got the snow!
We went to Myoko for the snow and we got the snow! Loved the long ski runs at Suginohara and skiied there 3 days. Also skied one day each at Ikenotaura Onsen and Seki Onsen. Low visibility killed us! Be prepared to ski in low cloud and less groomed tracks.
Lime Resort Onsen was fantastic.
Local restaurants (Chinese, Japanese and Greek) were great food and value for money.

Myoko Kogen is a great destination for a ski holiday, it is close to the train line, it offers a range of different ski locations within half an hour of the resort all accessible by bus or taxi. The ski lift tickets are very affordable. Myoko Kogen is a traditional Japanese Resort offering Onsens, traditional Japanese food, Ryokan accommodation as well as Western food and accommodation. The town is only 32 km from Nagano, where the Winter Olympics were held and it takes approx. 2 1/2 hours by train from Tokyo.

Akakura Onsen is a nice small village with plenty of restaurants and hotels. Some were closed due to the small amount of visitors, but as there was so much snow it was nice to have space everywhere. Good variety of foods, and a few bars. Make sure your lodge has transportation when the shuttle buses don't drive around the resorts (like this month, which made traveling around harder unless you have 4-wheel drive AND snow tires).

Stayed in the hybrid Western/Japanese style room which is spacious and comfortable. décor is fairly basic but the hotel is clean and tidy. Our only criticism is the size of the bathroom. It is on the small size, even by Japanese standards.
Decent sized drying room.
Ski/snowboard hire shop on site.
Location is perfect, right opposite the Kanko gondola and a 5 minute walk in to the Akahura village. We have stayed here before and will happily stay again.
Wonderful Cosy rustic Traditional Authentic Janpanses Hotel/Restaurant/Museam run by local hardworking family that did everything to make our stay Fantastic. Daily breakfast was excellent and the night we are in was 100%. 2x In-house complementory Onsen. So morning and night. Before and after the slopes. Couldn't have lasted a week on the slopes without it. Central to all the restaurants, bars and everything else in Akakura Onsen area
Food portions are large. Location is great to any of the myoko resorts. Staff is so kind, thoughtful, will go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable - including shuttling you around.
Comfortable rooms, great breakfast, lovely onsen and very helpful and friendly staff. They can organise free shuttle to and from Myoko Station to the hotel
