Miyajima is a beautiful island with much to offer.
Miyajima is a beautiful island with much to offer. It has a lovely little town, maple trees, deer roaming free, an impressive floating gate, hiking trails, temples… and people. Tons of people. Zillions of people. Fortunately, you can always do an overnight stay and stroll when the hordes are no longer or not yet there. This is when the island is more rewarding. There are several ryokan to choose from and you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Just beware it will probably cost you an arm and a leg. But this humble reviewer would gladly lose a limb just to experience the place the way it’s meant to be.
Go first hour in the morning when the tide is low, and you can walk right to the gate and touch it. Contemplate the deer (but don’t touch or feed, please), eat some oysters if that’s your thing, go up Mt. Misen and enjoy the views, and if you happen to go in autumn, don’t forget a visit to the momiji park.

It may be the most photographed torii gate in Japan but Miyajima is so much more. Our host advised us to hike the mountain and it was challenging and beautiful, hard work but worthwhile. We made it to the top of Mount Misen then hiked down to catch the torii at high tide.
another day to explore the splendid temples would make it truely memorable,

We spent 2 nights, but visited Hiroshima on either side. We had a good day exploring the island and it was a nice relaxing nature break. My family were very pleased with the two nights. We went to Hiroshima early in the morning we checked out.
We mainly ate at our hotel, but there is a busy food market area for lunch.
We walked up to the cable car station, which was very easy and then took the cable car to the top. We got a little lost walking down!

Miyajima is beautiful!
Miyajima is beautiful! My only concern was that my friends and I arrived a little bit after the restaurants had closed, so we had to quickly go to the conbini for dinner. Other than that it was an excellent experience! The scenery is beautiful and the food is delicious.

It is so worthwhile to stay overnight in Miyajima
It is so worthwhile to stay overnight in Miyajima
It gives you time to take the ropeway cable car up the mountain, and potentially hike to the top. You get to see the Torii gates at all different tides, and without the crowds.

This charming ryokan style hotel was like stepping back in time. Like others have mentioned, the hotel is dated, but it is well maintained and very clean. The view from the rooms out to the sea is lovely and futon beds very comfortable. The food was excellent and service exceptional. We enjoyed using the onsen facilities and rocking round in our yakuta. The shuttle service from the port was also very handy. We had a memorable stay and loved our time on Miyajima.
Staying in this hotel was like going back in time. The host was very warm and welcoming. It was nice to chat with her and she even invited me for breakfast as I had to book a double room as a single traveller. Both dinner and breakfast were rich and very tasty. I highly recommend staying one night on Miyajima and enjoying the scenery late at night / early in the morning without masses of tourists.
The property was amazing, the position is extremy comfortable as it is really close to the Miyajima Ferry pier. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful (they speak English as well). Continental breakfast was really good. Rooms are japanese style with comfortable futon beds and tatami on the floor. Our stay was amazing, if we’ll come back in Miyajima, we will definitely book this hotel again!
Wonderfully clean and friendly hotel for a night stay on Miyajima. The staff helped us with an issue when I left my passport at the previous hotel! The hotel is calm and quiet and the pyjamas comfortable! Visited the onsen too and it was lovely, even though I’m from uk wasn’t uncomfortable about being naked! I would book two nights if I visited again to enjoy the facilities more.
We chose this hotel for its proximity to the station and the ferry terminal. It was a good choice for our travel to the island of Miyajima. The room was a reasonable size, clean and comfortable. We enjoyed hamburgers in the cafe downstairs, and the breakfast buffet had a good selection.
