For a Business Hotel, it's great. It has everything you need. Staff are helpful. Stay included a nice breakfast. Conveniently located right next to the train station, which does local and shinkansen trains. Not necessarily a downside for the hotel itself, but Maibara itself doesn't have a lot going on. I essentially just used this place as a place to sleep and it was more than comfortable enough for that purpose.
Offering a garden, ゲストハウス メグルヤ 中山道柏原宿 features accommodations in Maibara. This guest house offers free private parking, a shared kitchen, and free Wifi.

Maibara is a great 'gateway' location for basecamp if you're exploring Kansai [ie less expensive lodging than staying in Kyoto or Osaka] utilizing the shinkansen. If you're a first-timer in Japan and hoping to hit scenic historic sites, you should especially consider it; access to Nagahama Castle and Hikone Castle is super easy [and both are off-the-beaten path where foreign tourists are concerned [if you're at either mid-week, even in 'high' season (ie cherry blossom or autumn leaf viewing), you'll like encounter few foreign tourists], but quick walks from main local JR stations]
*Photos attached are @ Hikone Castle, 1 station south of Maibara station; about a 10 minute walk from Hikone Station]
