We take the lodge house which is very big and spacious for my family of 5. The design with wooden blocks is very beautiful. The lodge house is a bit far from main hotel building but shutter bus is always available.

Kusatsu Onsen Kusatsu Hotel1913, hotel in Kusatsu

Built in 1913, the Kusatsu Hotel exhibits the architectural style of the Japanese Taisho Era.

This place is amazing, I felt like this hotel deserves more stars than what it has! The building is beautiful and the room I booked definitely met my expectations. The hotel has a shuttle bus that can collect you from the bus terminal. Once you arrive, they take your luggage from you and have them delivered straight to your room. You take off your shoes at the entrance and they immediately put them away for you - no need for you to bend down or reach over - and they know exactly who you are so that when you next come to the front of the hotel your shoes are already out and ready for you to wear and walk outside! The staff are extremely polite and helpful and did their absolute best to make our stay the best. The building is well maintained and the room is very clean. They also have private onsens for rent and provide you with their own yukata which you can wear around town with! The general temperature of the waters in Kusatsu is naturally very high so prepare to immerse yourself in very hot water when going to any of the onsens. There is a cold water station just outside the hotel’s onsens so that you can cool off and rehydrate after taking a dip. We booked with breakfast and it was probably the best breakfast I’ve had during my holiday - the traditional Japanese breakfast served was healthy, filling, and very delicious! It had a variety of small dishes and the presentation was just as great as everything else. We stayed for two nights and each day had a different breakfast set. If we had any questions we could always ask the staff and they would do their best to accommodate us. They absolutely pamper you here and the cost is definitely worthy every penny. High quality service. 10/10 would come back again!

The room was quite big, we stayed in the western/japanese style room, it had ample space, and the view from the room was also really good.

Yorokobinoyado Takamatsu, hotel in Kusatsu

Located in the Kusatsu hot-spring area and a 10-minute walk from Kusatsu Bus Terminal, Yorokobinoyado Takamatsu offers simple Japanese-style rooms and various indoor/outdoor hot-spring baths.

This is the second time I have returned to this hotel because I was very satisfied with the structure and the service. This time I decided to bring my friends too, so they could enjoy the hospitality of this hotel. Located about 5 minutes walk from the Yubatake, and about 15 minutes walk from the bus terminal (on request it is possible to book a free shuttle at specific times). The hotel is large and spacious and has recently done some renovations to improve the lobby area. It has rooms spread over various floors and offers both Japanese and Western style rooms, some even with private onsen. It offers a good, fairly varied breakfast buffet served in a panoramic room. The restaurant on the 5th floor is elegant and refined and dinner is excellent both in the choice of dishes and in the presentation. The onsen on the 4th floor is large and has both indoor and outdoor areas. It is also possible to book massages with truly very good professional masseurs. The staff is kind, helpful and ready to solve any problem. Highly recommended for a relaxing experience and appreciate the comforts of a classy hotel.

Kusatsu is a great onsen town that is fairly compact. Not too easy to walk up and down the hills in the wooden sandals from the inn but very picturesque. The Yubataka cultural performance is not to be missed. The local food is delicious and overall much cooler temperature than Tokyo.

Of the three most popular onsen towns in Gunma, Kusatsu is definitely the most accessible and easiest to wander through. It has an almost amusement park-like quality and is very convenient. There are not many dining options so make sure to book a hotel with breakfast and dinner.

I love this town for its distinctly authentic Japanese feel.

I love this town for its distinctly authentic Japanese feel. It is nestled in the mountains, a gorgeous drive from Tokyo (If you have the time, drive!) Many places to drop in for a foot soak, lots of little shops and restaurants. Prepare to wait in the busy season (which I believe is the fall and winter). This time we stayed in a traditional Japanese hotel with tatami and only futons for sleeping- being from the US, this made the trip especially fun but make sure you are ok with getting up and down from the floor. There are less people who speak English than in the major cities. But if you are comfortable pointing and smiling and trying google translate, it is a beautiful place to visit. Note that people with limited mobility may find the town difficult to navigate (steps and steep hills). Better for adults, but there is a little tropical zoo nearby and the onsen demonstration is fun.

Lovely Onsen town. Simply magical during winter.

Lovely Onsen town. Simply magical during winter. We went in February and it was snowing. Family love it so much that we’re planning to visit for next winter. A lot of private hot spring and delicious food. We had kaiseki for breakfast and dinner at our ryokan. Definitely worth the trip and ain’t too far from Tokyo. Stay a night if possible.

If you want to experience the quintessential Japanese, hot-spring town in the mountains then, Kusatsu is the place for you. It takes a while to get there with the train and bus but if you have the time then I would recommend it. The culture surrounding hot-springs is unique to the Japanese and there is no better place to experience it. Get early there for a day trip because most buses coming down to the train station stop running around 7 PM.

Comfortable and clean rooms with good beds. Receptionist DC was very friendly and provided good service and information. Basic breakfast was adequate especially the freshly made strawberry banana smoothie. Very good location, few minutes walk to the yubatake area and yet very quiet. Good value especially for a Saturday night in Kusatsu Onsen.

very Zen Style Hotel. Beds are comfortable. 2 Onsen (1 men, 1 women). The one for men is a bit dark. The host speaks excellent English. Dinner and breakfast are a real highlight! The Kaiseki- Dinner was just amazing. Overall price for the hotel was quite high, but most of the hotels in Kusatsu are expensive. Would love to come again!
