Having Self check in was nice, we got lost and arrived pretty late, but we were able to get to our room immediately.
The inn is in a quiet area next to a lovely stream that culled us to sleep at night.
Our room had toilet and shower room separated, which was very nice.
The room is a little small, and if you have too much luggage it might get a bit crammed but we managed anyway.
There's a couple of kettles in the common area that you can use and you can probably leave your bags within the Inn before/after check in if you need to, but we didn't require that service.
You can borrow umbrellas if it's raining.
The area seems very quiet and anonymous, but in the end it's quite nice, there's so many small restaurants/convenience stores/chains around, it's perfect for having dinner after a long day walking.
There's a jr station within 10 mins walking and plenty of bus stops. Also a couple of laundromats.

We booked the 'Kabuki Room' which was the only one in the hotel! Actually only booked this hotel because this room was so unique and charming! It turned out that it was a good choice of hotel, anyway, as very nicely located within the shopping arcade and not far walking from 3 different lines of station. Also close to the food market and the river and lots of restaurants as well as a lovely Art Museum nearby. Depending on one's fitness, it was also close enough to walk to a lot of the attractions like Kiyomizu-dera Temple via the river path (40 mins or so) .
Opened in March 2015, Sakura Terrace The Gallery is conveniently located a 2-minute walk from the JR Kyoto Station. The on-site cafe offers house-roasted coffee and a selection of tea.
