The location was great with free parking onsite. 7-11 across the street, cable car close by, many places to visit within a 20 minute drive. The room was large and had a great view of the river, cliffs and fall foliage.

The room space you get is unheard of anywhere in Japan. Staff are also reasonably accommodating of requests and parking is free to utilize as a guest, especially if you're spending the day hiking before checking in.

Location is next to Asahidake Ropeway, close enough you can walk to it. They provide 2 toasts for breakfast, which was very nice. The bath was so nice and relaxing, especially after a day of hiking and/or exploring the area.
I had a one bed/one room stay and it was superbly spacious.
10/10 would come back.
I stayed in Sounkyo from 8-11th March 2024. Sounkyo is a very picturesque small town. There are Sika deer that come into the town center to eat! The Sounkyo Gorge is impressive with mount Kurodake toweing over the Gorge.
Take the Daisetsuzan Sōunkyō Kurodake Ropeway and on a good day you can see a 360 degree panorama of the Daisetuzan mountain range.
There is a very good Visitors Center in Sounkyo with very friendly and helpful staff. One of the staff took me on a walk through the deep new powder snow which had fallen the night before. The lady took me just because she loved that area and was pleased I was interested in finding walks to explore.
I would love to come here again in the summer and Autumn to see the changing seasons.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The place was very cute and cozy, and my room was spacious. Laundry was inexpensive, and the location wasn't too far from the little town. It was right next to two bigger hotels with day-use onsen for a very reasonable price (pick up discount coupons from reception). One had a nice bakery/cafe that I went to for breakfast. I wish I had tried the hostel's curry for dinner, as dining options in the little town were pretty limited and most restaurants were closed.
First I should say that I really loved Sounkyo - I would like to come back. However, I wouldn't stay at this hotel again!
The public areas of the hotel - the lounge and bakery on the ground floor were nice.
The onsens were nice with scenic views of the canyon and mountains.
There is a free shuttle bus to and from Asahikawa which can be arranged.
I booked a Japanese style room and it was quite big.
An electrical power strip with USB charging sockets was provided in the room.
Large outdoor bath is huge with good view. Mixed bath that we can spend time together with our family. Though the hotel is not new but well maintained facilities and clean. Breakfast is good with various kinds of food. A Thai staff at the front desk is lovely with good service mind. Hotel offers the shuttle bus back to Asahikawa station. Very nice!!!
This was a large hotel with a buffet etc. The baths were good and everything was clean and the staff nice. If you are looking for something a bit boutique like its not for you but great for a one or two night stay in Sounkeyo Onsen
