Gorgeous private hot springs. Perfect luxury after a long day trekking. The walk over the pass to Hongu is a short hour to an amazing breakfast or lunch. I’ve stayed at hostels all over the world and this is my favorite.

The In-Room Onsen was nice you could either soak your full body or just soak your feet. The rooms were spacious. Dinner was pretty good and the view from the room was directly looking onto the Oto River.
Guesthouse Okagesan offers accommodations in Hongu, 12 miles from Kumanokodo Nakahechi Museum of Art and 15 miles from Kumanoshi Kiwakozan Museum.

We stayed in a lot of great places during our trip to Japan, but this was my favorite. The house was beautiful and atmospheric, like something out of a dream. The host was friendly and helpful. We met him at his restaurant down the block and he showed us to the property and recommended a nearby hot spring. The house is located in the Hongu area, a ten or fifteen minute walk from the bus stop that will take you to the shrines and Kumano Kodo.

Beautiful farming town, with a few scattered shops to ease hunger. Local shop owners were accommodating and kind. City tourism center was closed but the bathroom remained open for guests. We were only passing through to Koguchi but it was a charming stop.
