Business Hotel Matsuoka, hotel in Akankohan

Set in Akankohan, 2.5 km from Lake Akan, Business Hotel Matsuoka offers accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking. Akan National Park is 2.6 km from the hotel.

The hotel is certainly at the best location possible. Right in from of the bus station, so you will not have to carry your lugage for long. And since the village is small, you can easily go everywhere by walk. The hotel has an onsen if you want to relax in the evening. The rooms are big. I had a lot of space for everything.

Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga, hotel in Akankohan

Set on the shores of Lake Akan, Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga offers beautiful hot-spring baths and a variety of shops and restaurants. The spacious Japanese rooms feature tatami (woven-straw) flooring.

Onsen was very good and available in 3 locations. On the Ground Floor & 8th Floor of the main building as well as on the 3rd Floor of the adjacent wing. Onsen on the Ground Floor of the main building is by far the best followed by the 8th Floor. Not recommended to use the onsen on the adjacent wing as it's small and mainly for the hotel customers that stay next door as there were 3 hotels that are interconnected. Food was pretty good as the hotel is inclusive of both breakfast & dinner.

Moritsubetsu, hotel in Tsubetsu

Situated in Tsubetsu, 28 km from Lake Kussharo, Moritsubetsu features accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a restaurant and a bar.

The entrance to the hotel gave us the impression of arriving in an enchanted house in the middle of the forest, it was beautiful! Moreover, we chose a Japanese style room and we slept like babies. The women's onsen was also perfect: several hot baths, a cold one to give us energy, a sauna and a magnificent outdoor bath which again gave us the feeling of bathing in the middle of the forest. Breakfast was amazing too. Lots of choice, everything was neat and delicious. We loved the atmosphere and the view on the garden. And last but not least, the staff was really helpful and lovely from start to finish! :)

Kussharo Prince Hotel, hotel in Teshikaga

Situated in Teshikaga, 12 km from Lake Kussharo, Kussharo Prince Hotel features accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a restaurant and a spa and wellness centre.

This hotel is simply superb! It is big and spacious. Located in the middle of nowhere, that is in the Akan-Mashu National Park on the shore of the Kussharo Lake, it includes plenty of attractions for guests to stay on its premises. A game arcade, karaoke rooms, a convenience store, wooden chairs in the backyard... It is an easy ride to local lakes and hiking trails. The room was big, modern, well equipped, clean. The majority of staff spoke English, everyone was super kind and helpful. Dinner and breakfast buffets, although pricey, were amaizng, versatile, delicious. We had an amazing stay there.

Artemina Kussharoko Log Terrace, hotel in Teshikaga

Set in Teshikaga, 6.4 km from Lake Kussharo and 25 km from Lake Mashu, Artemina Kussharoko Log Terrace offers air conditioning.

The location was off the beaten track and very peaceful and quiet. You can see the stars at night and you can run into animals along the road when you drive back at night. Saw deers and foxes by the road when heading back at night. The floor was heated, which helps tremendously with keeping the place warm. The open air bath was nice too!

Location is pretty far if relying on public transportation. it takes approximately 6 hours by train from Sapporo To Kushiro and another approximately 2 hours by bus from Kushiro to the hotel. Be prepared for a full day of travel if using public transportation. Renting a car from New Chitose Airport will definitely save a lot of traveling time as it only takes approximately 4 hours from the airport to the hotel by car.

Our view of the lake was fantastic and our tatami room was spacious. The buffet was exceptional. There were so many great food stations besides Japanese cuisine. The hotel was just across the street from the shops and walking distance to the Aikan village. Only wished that my husband could have enjoyed the public onsen. Tattoos are not allowed. They offered a private onsen at a nominal fee.

Lake Akan with Mount Meakan and it's surroundings is very scenic. However in my opinion Akankohan has been spoilt by catering to the many bus tour groups that arrive every day. The main street is lined with souvenir shops and there are snow-mobiles zooming across frozen lake Akan once the tour buses arrive. Once the tour buses leave in the morning and before the new arrive in the afternoon the hotels and town are peaceful. Even when the tour groups are in town it's possible to find peace by walking out of town a few minutes. The Akankohan Eco Museum Center is a short walk out of town and is well arranged. There are some nice areas to walk around Akankohan. You can come to Akankohan on a day trip with a tour and take some nice selfies. If you want to get away from the tourists there are some nice walks in the area where the day-trippers don't go. You can enjoy peace and quiet in the town early afternoon before the tour buses arrive. It's also a good time to enjoy the onsens when they're not usually busy. You can also visit the Akan International Crane Center (GRUS) which is only about an hour away. There you can see the wonderful Red-crowned cranes. It's well worth a trip.

Nice mountain and lake scenery with volcanic activity .

Nice mountain and lake scenery with volcanic activity . Mountain and forest walks and nature trails . Not busy in May. There is plenty of nature as we spotted brown bear, fox and deer. Flowers and bloom was slow , perhaps better in June

    Great modern ryokan!

Great modern ryokan! The front desk was very helpful and friendly. Although they spoke little English we were able to communicate fine. Buffet dinner and breakfast was great, as well. Hotel room was bigger than expected and the view of the lake in winter was lovely! Lots of cute little stores and forest walks to do around the town as well. Visit the mud volcano to see some geothermal activity, and go across the street and sit with a beer in the public foot onsen. Unfortunately, we weren't able to rent a room with a private onsen, but the front desk was really helpful in arranging a private onsen for my husband and I at the sister hotel. It was really easy as they arranged everything for us. I would definitely stay here again!
