Quaint and provincial Udine is one of those typical Italian towns grown for centuries under the influences of different cultures. Nonetheless, it also represents a gateway to the eastern Alps.
The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic age, and its foundation and name origin is not clear to historians. First mentioned in Latin records as Udene in 983, it was long under Venetian rule.
