Near the Slovenian border, Trieste combines the waterside setting of Venice with the elegance of Vienna. The Habsburgs ruled here for over 500 years and built Miramare Castle on a rocky outcrop to the northwest. Their other influences include stately Piazza Unità d’Italia, looking out to sea and spectacularly lit at night.
But this is just a glimpse into Trieste's long and fascinating history. The 1st-century Riccardo Arch hides in a narrow street, and part-way up the hills behind the city center are Roman theater remains, with columns from the Roman forum standing next to San Giusto castle and cathedral.
The most photographed church is Sant’Antonio Nuovo, overlooking a boat-lined canal. The nearby Stock Exchange has a colonnaded façade and its square hosts some of the city’s shops. The most popular cultural attraction is the Revoltella Museum of modern art, while more sobering is Risiera di San Sabba, a former concentration camp near the Palatrieste and Nereo Rocco sports stadiums.
Water sports include windsurfing and kitesurfing from the port which is an important coffee importer. Unsurprisingly, the city’s Viennese-style coffeehouses serve top-quality brews, and the best is reportedly Caffè San Marco, once frequented by famous authors.
Booking.com’s Trieste accommodations include hotels with pools, cheap apartments by the station and B&Bs near Ronchi dei Legionari Airport.

I think that Trieste has a really interesting architecture - it is more similar to the Austro-Hungarian cities like Budapest or Vienna that to the Italina city like Bologna, for instance. You can find the Mitteleuropa influences in the cuisine as well and have a nice gulash in many macelarias, which both sell raw meats or sausages and serve hot dishes. If you travel with children, they may be interested in the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale with many skeletons and stuffed animals.

I have visited Trieste on many occasions as it is a city that is close to my heart. I will certainly return. The city has many different aspects - the old city with it's historical elements - Roman ruins and a beautiful old cathedral - and the seafront with relaxing walks. And a short bus ride out of town is Miramare castle and in the opposite direction there is the Grotto Gigantica. The city is also well situated for excursions to Venice or into Slovenia. The city boasts many restaurants and - as the home of Illy caffe - the bars have the best coffee in Italy.

Trieste is a lovely city and has a friendly atmosphere.
Trieste is a lovely city and has a friendly atmosphere. We enjoyed the city on foot and felt very safe. The employees and patrons at every restaurant, coffee shop, store, etc we visited were friendly and accomodating. We only visited for two days and I think 4-5 leisurely days would have been better. There are several sites outside the city but nearby that would be delightful to see on a quick day trip. I think the biggest downfall, as with every city, is the high traffic and not enough parking. We ate at Novo Foraperfora where the food and staff were truly delightful. We also enjoyed drinks and a meat & cheese board at Al Curto.

Nice atmosphere, fair prices, very good restaurants and high standard cultural life. We recommend the Il Rossetti Theater, you can find a lot of play or musical in foreign (maybe English) language with Italian subtitles.

Hidden gem!!!!!
Hidden gem!!!!! just booked this to help my wife recover from long plane ride. Gorgeous town with lots of history I did not know. After being in certain Italian cities on the cruise, we were constantly referring back to Hotel Italia, Illy and Osteria James Joyce. I found so many things to do in just 1.5 days. Liked the "under crowdedness" of Trieste, everywhere else we went, Rome Pisa, Naples seemed crowded and unhappy.

An amazing find. Modern fully equipped apartment in this heritage building run by the Hotel Continental across the street. No traffic on this pedestrian-only street and several restaurants in the street. The option of breakfast is worthwhile with full service and hot or cold menus all for the additional 16Euro per person. Taxis stop about 20 meters from the hotel door so being on the pedestrian street was no problem despite a lot of big luggage. This was the best accommodation we have found in Italy.
A delightful little boutique hotel slightly off the core of Trieste. Nevertheless very walkable to all of the sights. Turning left from the front door and a half block later puts you in the extensive pedestrian area of Trieste. The staff were very friendly, the room clean, the bed comfortable, and the ambience relaxing. The buffet is more traditional Italian meaning expect slightly warmed over scrambled eggs but excellent finger foods. Definitely will stay here again if in Trieste.
This is a classic hotel in the heart of Trieste. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, clean, quiet and well equipped. Everything in the centre of town is within easy walking distance. Valet service to park the car after drop off of luggage (€ 25/day).
Staff fantastic! Hotel location perfect for us. We didn't book a 5 star hotel rather a night stay travelling through Trieste. Could not have been better. Immediately after booking through to check out it was perfect for us
Novo Albergo Centro was the best hotel we stayed in during our week in Italy, along with Pensione Stork.
Albergo Centro's rooms and breakfast were wonderful. I can't recommend it highly enough.
