The Cinque Terra towns are very crowded and we do not like that. I searched for a village midway between cinque Terra and Portofino. After a busy day of hiking and tourist stops we like to have peace and quiet, and somewhere the locals live. This is what we loved about Sestri Levante.

Sestri Levante has two very different beach areas.
Sestri Levante has two very different beach areas.
The long beach and promenade, and the less obvious 'secret' bay. They make Sestri Levante special. Study Google Earth to appreciate the two distinct areas.
The picturesque town centre in-between the beaches has classy shops, restaurants and cafes as well as the town's main church.
In summary the resort is lively and busy in summer, without being overcrowded. Ideal for families and visitors of all age groups.
For those looking to visit the high profile Ligurian towns and areas such as Portofino and the Cinque Terra, trains and public transport from Sestri Levante will get you there in under an hour. There are ferries costing a bit more but which offer splendid views of the rugged Ligurian coastline.
The hills behind suit walkers looking for a challenge, but the town centre, promenade, and small harbour are fairly compact and on flat ground which makes for easy strolling with not too much in the way of traffic.
The town can be a base for touring as far afield as Pisa or Genoa, or as somewhere to stay for a week to enjoy Sestri's own attractions and comfortable climate, whilst mixing with its friendly and welcoming inhabitants.

Nice city with two beaches with very clean water, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Full of restaurants, cafes and bars - we especially recommend making a detour to Caffe da Ludo e Gio, where we had a very nice aperitivo. There are some buses, but if you choose your starting point well, you'll have everything within walking distance.

Sestri is a very pretty Ligurian town with a beautiful bay (...
Sestri is a very pretty Ligurian town with a beautiful bay (Bay of Silence), which has a delightful free beach, as well as a main beach. The free part of the main beach was nice and umbrellas and deck chairs could be hired for 20 Euros a day. The sea was beautiful, warm and clean. There are also private beaches, as is usual in Italy. There were many, many restaurants and pizzerias, some on the sea front, lovely for sunset time. Most, if not all, were good, and similar prices. Many ice cream places, all really excellent. It's not as upmarket as Portofino and Santa Margherita, but that's definitely a plus. Station not far from the centre, about 10-15 minutes walk, and a few supermarkets nearby.

An attractive town, not too full: enough tourists for us not to stand out, but not too many to make access to restaurants an issue. Good train access to the Cinque Terre where many more tourists was around.

Sestri Levante is a very nice town with a historical centre...
Sestri Levante is a very nice town with a historical centre and full of beaches (many of them unfortunately private).
There is all infrastructure needed for visitors. Not so far away from the town centre are also free parking sites (paid parking in the town) and everything is close by.
Nice places to see are simply reached, for example, by train - Portofino, Camoglia, Cinque Terre, or by car - Genova, Pisa, Lucca, La Spezia and other.

Everything was perfect, I don't have a single thing to complain about. Nicolo did everything to make us feel comfortable and welcome during our stay. Room was super clean, beautifully refurbished without losing its old charm, beautiful and relaxing view, breakfast served in the garden (tasty and different every day), two beautiful terraces, short hiking trail along the coast leading to the old town of Sestri Levante which starts right in front of the house.
We would definitely come back!
This was the best stay of our entire 3 week vacation in Italy. Camilla did everything to make sure we were happy. We loved the breakfast and the good coffee and tea (and that it’s available all day long). The place is lovely decorated with much attention for detail, very clean and new. The environment makes you relax and unwind. The whole family is very warm and welcoming. Grazie mille Camilla and Luca 🫶🏽
