We stayed in the Arthotel NOT Foresteria il voltone ….we liked the fact that Tatiana, receptionist at the ArtHotel went above and beyond to help us. She organised a room in the ArtHotel on the ground floor where we were happy. The Art hotel is central and we were able to walk everywhere we wanted. We paid for parking in the hotel parking which is 30 m from the hotel.

Hotel Astoria, hotel in Cremona

Hotel Astoria first opened its doors in 1890. Located in a limited traffic area in Cremona's historic centre, it is just 50 metres from Cremona Cathedral and 100 metres from the Violin Museum.

The location is fantastic, within 5 minutes walk of the main Piazza del Duomo . Beautiful cathedral with a huge tower and lots of nice bars. There is a car park 5 minutes walk away which you can pay for at the Hotel a ticket for €12 for one day. Also included is the payment for entering the ZTL (limited traffic ) zone. Reception staff very helpful. The air conditioning worked very well in the bedroom, the bathroom was good and the bed comfortable. A kettle and tea and coffee was nice too.

Cremona is a great small city. Very compact and walkable.

Cremona is a great small city. Very compact and walkable. The central square is especially lovely at night with the cathedral beautifully lit up. In the warmer weather the square comes alive after dark, packed with people eating and drinking in the outside bars and restaurants. The violin museum is interesting and worth a visit. And the Piazza Stradivari with the statue of the famous violin maker is another must do. Some very good restaurants. We especially liked the Indian Punjab grill and bar restaurant. Great atmosphere , helpful and friendly staff and most important, the food is of very good quality and beautifully presented. On our second night we ate at Tacabanda. Very good food, nice owner but a bit pricey and without the same ambiance. And a good 15 min. walk from city centre

Beautiful old and accessible Italian City. So much to see.

Beautiful old and accessible Italian City. So much to see. Recommend picking up a Cremona map from tourist information which includes three walking tours / itineries - Musical Tour, Ancient City Tour, New (C16th) City Tour. Also recommended - go into the Town Hall for exhibits, and views over the Piazza to the cathedral and baptistry. The Violin museum is interesting.

Cremona is a fascinating destination, its history is revealed on every corner you walk about. The Cremona cathedral that dates back to the 12th century, the baptistry, and the bell tower are a must visit. You may not want to miss of course the Museo del Violino where you can trace back the history of violin making as it developed in Cremona. If you're hungry for great pizza, go to La Pendola and if for great seafood, Pesciolini Innamorati. In short, you'll want to comeback there many times.

Italy is full of interesting destinations that do not make...

Italy is full of interesting destinations that do not make it to the top of Tripadvisor or Lonely planet, but are still very interesting. Cremona is one of those places. The good news (for travellers) is that the tourist masses will stay away, most people come here because of its history of musical instruments. For me the Torrazzo (the 120m tower in the square) was the more impressive sight. I have been up many towers, this is truly one of the most spectacular ones, and it has a still functioning original astronomical clock, as well as very nice explanations within the tower. The Violin museum will attract most tourists, I think it could have used more traditional exhibits where you can read and learn instead of all the (annoying) multimedia exhibits that do not tell much. The recitals (not every day, check the schedule) are a must see though. It is quite interesting to see a 180-200 year old violin (Vesuvio Stradivarius in our case) taken form the exhibition brought to the hall and hear it played live in front of an audience. And then there is the food. There are excellent restaurants in the area, I can recommend the Ristorante Il Violino (upscale, quite pricey) for example.

    It's a very atmospheric town.

It's a very atmospheric town. It was where Stradivari the violin maker lived and I was there for the Stradivari festival, but even during the rest of the year the museum of the violin has recitals on violins from their collection at noon.

I love everything about this place! Clean, friendly, beautiful rooms, amazing location. It is amazing. Being right in the Piazza de Duomo means that one walks out of the hotel into the heart of Cremona with the beauty of the Duomo right in front of your eyes. It is magical.
