Really liked the mountain area and towns around the Gran Paradiso park. Good base to visit the park, run over to the Hellbronner and Aguille du Midi lifts, visit Aosta. Could have easily spent a whole week in the area doing more hiking (the trail around Lillaz Falls was a great experience during our spring visit) and visiting the small towns in the area. We did see a chamois, but did not spot any ibex during our visit.

Cogne is the main village in Gran Paradis national park in Val d'Aosta.
Cogne is picturesque, with a market for local produce, several charming restaurants, and good outdoor activity shops - even a cobbler for hiking boots.
The walking trails accessible from Cogne range from T (touristic) via E (excursion) to EE (expert excursion), and have fabulous views of surrounding mountains.
Two of the main hotels are owned and run by the same family, with the older hotel established in 1899 - a real sense of history.

Cogne is in one of the smaller valleys in Val d'Aosta, situated almost at the end of the valley. Great nature, snow, local food, ski and cross country resort. Nice setting, but you have to know that it's 27 km from the main valley and the town of Aosta.
Be prepared for winter conditions and more snow than usual, also on the road. The village of Epinel (where we were located) is quite steep, you should have good shoes and preferably hiking poles, especially in winter.
Cogne offers reataurants, spa facilities, all sorts of sports and great hiking spots.

Cogne managed to stay the same small town as it was 30 years ago, it did not change, and let's just hope it will stay the same for the next generations to enjoy its superb alpine surroundings.
The centre (late August) was not too much crowded by tourists, it has a charming small church, and picturesque shops offering local delicacies (note: not suitable for people with celiac disease!), and wines in Italian spirit.
The mountain hiking trails leaving from Lillaz offer great alpine escape-the-world experiences, and the easy walk along the river to Epinel is nice for a rest day.
- host was friendly, contacted us in advance and showed us around at arrival
- property was clean
- had pretty much everything you would need
- balcony
- well heated and access to control it
- free parking
- relatively easy to access considering it's on a hill side. Close to Cogne and good base for ice climbing
- single rooms are relatively small but the common area is spacious
- likely to return in the future.
The location was excellent, easy to walk around, the hotel had its own garage, from which you could easily get to the hotel, the room was spacious and the view from the balcony was beautiful, the breakfast had everything a good breakfast should have, the hotel's spa was comfortable. Really nice and impressive drinks are available in the hotel bar :) The staff was also very friendly, my recommendation!
Cozy and spotless clean room. I really liked the Gaggia coffee machine, it was the best touch of an hotel room that I've seen in my life. Balcony and breakfast in the room was also a big plus.
