The Apulian capital Bari has been known for its port since Roman times. Nowadays there are 2 harbours: cruise ships and ferries to Greece and Croatia depart from the new port, while the old port shelters fishing vessels.
Between them is a seafront road bordering the real attraction – the old town. Narrow, cobbled streets lead under arches to hidden piazzas with pavement cafes. Many are on adjoining Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, where the old Roman road is exposed.
The imposing 12th-century Norman-Swabian Castle guards the west of the historic centre, and the simple Cathedral of San Sabino is from the same period. Equally understated is the Basilica of St Nicholas, housing relics of the saint. Pope John Paul II once prayed there, which may have given rise to Bari Airport’s name: Karol Wojtyła Airport.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the meeting point of the old town and the Murat district, built under orders of Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Facing each other across this street are the colourful façades of the municipal office and Piccinni Theatre, though most prestigious is the Petruzzelli Theatre opera house.
Booking.com’s Bari accommodation includes luxury hotels by the Fiera del Levante, cheap city centre apartments, and B&Bs near the train station. For families, the slides and swimming pools of Bari Acquapark make a great day out.

Polignano a Mare was a truly magical place and Alberobello a must see. Unfortunately we were not able to find a way to buy bus/train tickets to visit Matera on a Sunday and had to miss it, which was quite disappointing as we were very much looking forward to it. The food was good but the best places had lines that we had to wait in until we were able to be seated. Was not able to try the sgagliozze because there was always a line for them, and it turned out that most of the places that sell them don't open on Monday mornings, which was my last opportunity to try them before I left Bari.

If we come back, I recommend 3 nights in Bari, 2 nights in Polignano a Mare and 2 nights in Alberobello. We loved wandering the streets of Old Town Bari, visiting the beach Pare a Pomodoro. It was easy to get around by bus. Lastly, we ate lots and lots of gelato/ice cream!

We loved Bari but didn't have the chance to explore too much because only there for 3 days. We did take the bus to Alberobello for the day and the next day took the train to Lecce for the day. We are in our early 70's with husband having walking issues so one week would be perfect length of stay. If you plan to see Alberobello and the Trulli houses etc. book bus and train tickets in advance for best prices and departure times.

Beautiful city when in the old town which is charming, the lack of bins and untidyness detracts from the charm of the city. An evening walk through the alleyways is an experience dropping into the many bars for a glass of wine while watching the world pass by is charming. All pallets and wallets are catered for in the city from cheap pizzas to fine dining and even great sushi such as Sushi Daiki. Local buses are frequent although finish at 11 pm and taxis are a little hard to find due to the strict no pick up on the street rules. A car is needed to really see the region and visiting towns such as Monopoli, Alberobello and Lama Monachile are a must

Superb location. Just literally across the road of Bari train station. Andrea gave very
detailed instructions via whatapps on how to walk over. Able to find the apt blk quickly n easily.
Big supermarket 2 streets away.
Alberobello bus stop just downstairs.
Walking into old town is 15-20mins tho.
Easy and safe location despite being so near train station.
Very well equipped apt.
Even has an iron which is a life saver bonus!
Will highly reco if you need a lodging really near for train n bus travels.
The room was modern, towels were provided and air conditioning was available, which was really helpful. For breakfast we were given a tickets for a nearby cafe where we could get a coffee and sweet pastry. The hotel is located in walking distance to both old town (20 minutes) and Bari main railway station (30 minutes). There was free Wi-Fi, and possibility to leave luggage after check out until 13. The communication via booking is rather quick and can be held in English.
Location was fantastic - the lungomare was across the road so you could easily take a leisurely stroll along the path by the sea. The hotel restaurant had a great menu and the dining experience was fantastic - great view from the restaurant and there was a nice rooftop bar. Staff were welcoming and helpful. Within an easy walk of Bari old town centre.
The price-value range is really good. Good location 15minutes walk from Bari Centrale, the central station. The old town part is in 15-20 minutes walk. The Hotel is clean and the staff is really nice. They cleaned the rooms every day and give fresh towels.
Breakfast was amazing (fresh and suitable for all) and so was the staff (very generous with info and time). Hotel is also perfectly situated in Bari - close to the station and the old town.
