Assisi is world famous for the 2 saints – Francis and Clare – who were born here and subsequently founded Christian poverty movements. The tomb of the former is in the Basilica of St Francis, majestically located on a hill surveying the Umbrian countryside. Its graceful lines and powerful frescoes defy its 13th-century construction.
The Basilica of St Clare is from the same period and displays remains of the saint who inspired the Poor Clares. Between the 2 basilicas is the New Church, positioned where St Francis supposedly once lived, and the Cathedral of St Rufinus, dedicated to the saint who converted Assisi to Christianity.
Considerably older are the Roman villa remains near main Piazza del Comune, whose historic buildings house shops and pavements cafes on the site of the former forum. The columns of the Church of St Mary over Minerva were the entrance to a Roman temple.
Roman castle remains sit in the hills above Assisi, as does the more intact, medieval Rocca Maggiore which offers magnificent views over the town. Even higher is the Eremo delle Carceri, a stone hermitage where St Francis apparently preached to birds.
The cobbled streets ascending Assisi’s hills contain most of Booking.com’s accommodation options, including luxury hotels, cheap apartments and B&Bs near Santa Maria degli Angeli train station.
Assisi is a wonderful mountain top town. There are numerous sites to visit concerning Saint Francis, Saint Clare and St, Rufino. Many, many wonderful churches, roman ruins and a medieval castle overlooking the town.

Assisi was the highlight of my trip to Italy.
Assisi was the highlight of my trip to Italy. After the hubbub of the Roman city life, it was so special to retreat to the quaint, quiet beauty of St. Francis' hometown. We loved the basilicas and walking in the footsteps of Francis and Clare, seeing the original San Damiano cross and Portincula, and the tomb of the soon-to-be canonized, Carlo Acutis. The restaurants were delicious, the shops full of beautiful items, and the scenery breathtaking. It was easy to get to Assisi by train from Rome. The weather in October was spectacular - clear and sunny, and comfortably warm. A must see! I would highly recommend the Giotto Hotel, which was clean and comfortable with spectacular food and service!

The city is nice, and you have plenty of things to see and do, but if you are old and cannot walk, do not go to Assisi because the city terrain is in the mountains, and you will find so many stairs where the streets are in the hill.

Adored Assisi.
Adored Assisi. Its a stunning hill town, and the buildings and roadways are something out of a fairy tale. Very much enjoyed the basilicas and churches, visiting many pilgrimage sites, and I wasn't necessarily there for a pilgrimage. Whether you are one or not, two days in this hill town is an exceptional treat in Italy. It was exceedingly peaceful, you could feel it everywhere.

it’s a cozy, small hotel with a lovely boat Massimo who really made us feel welcome and taken care of. It’s right between the two parts of Assisi which is convenient as you can walk both up the hill to St Francis and back into the city and train station.
Everything was amazing, from the facilities, staff and absolutely amazing surroundings. Food was outstanding from breakfast to dinner. Can’t say enough about Assisi, our highlight of Italy. So so pleased we stay here and would highly recommend to anyone
Amazing hotel! Perfect location to explore Assisi. Our room was large, very clean & bed was comfortable. Breakfast was continental ,& a wide range of choices. If you are staying in Assisi, I would definitely recommend this hotel.
It was the best hotel on our trip to Italy! Just excellent! All staff was so helpful, friendly and professional! Also, the hotel restaurant was a great experience! The spa shouldn't be missed!
A really charming hotel with friendly and attentive staff, nice rooms, superb views, within walking distance of the centre of Assisi. The hotel has 3 stars but far exceeds that rating.
