The entire stretch of beach is dirty with plastic and other wastes . If a beach is filthy, there is no sense in visiting it. We have several beautiful beaches in India. One need not spend money and time to visit this place. As regards boating on backwaters, they are not much different. Perhaps keeping them clean is a Herculean task, which no one seems interested. The tourism in this area is already hit. When no one shows interest in visiting, will stakeholders wake up. Because, then, it will be like do or die. People act fast when their own survival is endangered.

Poovar Island retains its rustic charm due to its local people. The estuary and the boat ride around the island with a view of some dense mangroves are worth visiting once. The water crow in action is a sight to watch. However, the approach roads are a bit of a challenge. Given the significant number of 'resorts' in the area, we would have expected a well kept beachfront and investments in infrastructure like roads. That is sadly missing. The resort we stayed at masquerades as a five-star property. Hot running water 24/7, for instance, is not available. Please check the terms and conditions of the booking before you confirm your booking. Covid has taken a toll on footfalls, and the resorts need a make-over. In the long run, the resorts could reduce dependence on foreign tourists and look at alternatives like domestic tourism, which has taken off in several other tourist spots, especially in North India. They need to offer value for money, make the stay pleasant, and, more importantly, keep their promises. That is the only way to build the brand Poovar.
