If you want to get off the beaten track, visit Chamba and you will be immersed in the Himachal way of life. The town has many historical sites and the market is very lively and offers everything you need. The people of Chamba are friendly and respectful. The Bhuri Singh Museum houses treasures and the historical temples are worth visiting (Chamunda Devi, Hari Rai, Lakshmi Narayan). If you can afford it, visit Bharmour although the road is very chaotic. Don't forget to wander around uptown Chamba which has old wooden houses, doors and hidden wonders.

Quaint place and better option to Dalhousie as latter has become quite crowded now. One can easily go to Khajjiar, Dalhousie, and temples around. End of Sept isn't cold at all. No rains so one can plan as per the preference.
Considering the distance, one should not opt for Chamba in case one is planning only for a weekend. Atleast 4 days would be ideal. Road conditions are pretty much OK except some stretches.
