Breakfast was tasty, Maura was very friendly and recommended some places in the town for dinner. The room was very spacious and clean. It was also nice and warm, which is important for me as I’m always cold! Location was brilliant. Doggo is also very cute!

We really enjoyed staying “outdoors” in the tent. Rainy weather, windy weather, chilly nights - we loved it. Plenty of blankets to stay warm. Wine glasses. Large TV for Olympics viewing, cozy robe and water shoes to get back and forth to the bathroom. Bernie is an exceptional host who has thought of everything. We were minutes walk to the lake and a short drive to my uncles. Perfect location. There was a large variety of breakfast foods and beverages available in the main house, including coffee, fresh bread, jams, cereal, fresh eggs. We had a beautiful holiday/honeymoon/family visit. We’re so glad we chose to glamp at Bernie’s.
The Workhouse was interesting to see but we did not tour.
The Workhouse was interesting to see but we did not tour. The Castle was not visible from a close drive-by - one had to proceed down a drive to see. Enjoyed seeing all the cruisers docked along the Shannon. Restaurants sparse, but found a very fine pub to watch a football match. Precious little activity in town while we were there. It was a well-situated stop-off between The Burren and our next stop in the Boyne Valley.

Lovely town & the people were so friendly.
Lovely town & the people were so friendly. There could have been a bit more tourist shops to buy some gifts to take back, if you don't have a car to get into Galway city or other towns to buy these things it was a little lacking in that area.

There is an excellent Indian and Italian carry out restaurant in the centre of the town. There is also an Aldi in the town. Also Portumna is close to beautiful countryside and forest parks. We were visiting Flowerhill Equestrian Centre. For horse lovers this is an excellent facility, with a fabulous cross country course.
We also visited Ballinasloe which is another lovely town, about 30 km away.

The swim area was our big attraction, but we also were surprised at the walks, playgrounds, variety of supermarkets and cafes/restaurants, in general, it had everything you would want and central in relation to days out elsewhere if needed. But the weather was great that week too which helps a lot no matter where you are. Portumna house is run voluntarily and the people on the gate and in the house are very friendly and welcoming with lots of information. Don't skip a visit here, especially with the gardens in bloom. Overall, Portumna gets a thumbs up from this family

Glamping right in the middle of Portumna might sound strange but this is a wonderfully secluded location right off the main street. Shops are nearby. Lough Derg swimming centre & the local harbour are only a short cycle away so is the Portumna Bridge & Castle. The pod are very comfortable and the facilities are excellent. Dick Ridge, your host is a lovely man and he couldn't be more helpful. Anything you need or a suggestion for something to do Dick is your man.
Very comfortable, warm and had every thing needed for a short term stay and best of all was it’s proximity the nearby Portumna Castle which was just three minutes away and where I was doing some work
