A great place to stay. Rooms were clean and beds very comfy. We booked several hikes, a massage, and ate all our meals here during our visit to Bukit Lawang. The hikes will remain some of our very best memories ever. The staff, both within the guesthouse, and our hiking guides, and our driver to and from Medan were all wonderful. I have wanted to see the Orangutans for some years, and this trip fulfilled that for me. As a bonus we got to see the world’s largest flower, as it happened to bloom while we were there. Loved the monkey parade past our balcony each day. Sam runs an excellent business and manages a great team.

Everything. Tia is an exceptional host and great chef. All ingredients for every meal were fresh and delicious. Nothing was too much. Tia organised a superb jungle trek through the reputable government group and our guide Eddie was brilliant. It was amazing to see orangutans completely in the wild. The location is simply perfect, being the last place on this side of the river. The views are wonderful. Everything is kept very clean. This is a home from home, run by the heart.

Wisma Batu Mandi Trekking only, hotel in Bukit Lawang

Wisma Batu Mandi Trekking only features a garden, shared lounge, a terrace and restaurant in Bukit Lawang.

I definitely reccomend booking your stay at Wisma! Can’t reccomend it enough. The family are lovely and so helpful! The food is delicious and very cheap! They really make you feel at home here. Hospitality was 10/10! You can also book your trek with them which I really reccomend. Supri, the guide, is soooo helpful and was the best! He was able to customise the trek to our needs and went out of his way to make us happy! We went on the trek with him and Rudy and they were both amzing! We saw so many orangutans and stayed in huts overnight. The food along the way was also incredible and so fresh! We loved it! Thanks to Supri and Rudy we had the best time. They are super easy going and relaxed while still always ensuring that everything runs smoothly and we are safe and happy. 10000/10! It’s also much better to book the trek with local companies like Wisma to help the jungle and Bukit Lawang. Larger companies like “Sumatra Orangutan Explore” are owned by larger overseas companies and they don’t respect the local people and jungle. So it’s much better to book with a local business. This also means that you will have a more personalised and friendly experience. The accomodation is so beautiful! It’s a close walking distance to anything you need, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle. It’s very peaceful and calm, it sits right on the river so you can easily pop down for a swim whenever you want. They have a beautiful garden where they grow their own fruit. The juices and smoothies are so greasy and delicious. The food was also the best we had in Bukit Lawang. I could stay forever and ever! Really can’t reccomend this place enough we had an amazing time and can’t wait to go back!

Waterstone Guesthouse, hotel in Bukit Lawang

Set in Bukit Lawang, Waterstone Guesthouse offers 3-star accommodation with a garden, a terrace and a restaurant.

This is as good as it gets. The owner (Udin) is a very nice guy and helped me with organizing my jungle trek as well as transportation. The guesthouse is located in a very nice part of Bukit Lawang, surrounded by lots of nature. You can also take a dip in the river right in front of it. I was also very happy with the food. Small menu, but all the dishes were excellent, homemade and with local ingredients. You will not find western food here, which is a good thing.

Asim Paris Guesthouse, hotel in Bukit Lawang

Asim Paris is more than a guesthouse, it’s a home away from home. The staff are more than welcoming- they become your best friends while maintaining their professionalism. They’re ready to support you with anything and everything you need. They will arrange excursions for you such as jungle trekking, BBQs, rafting and more. They serve delicious food, the rooms are comfortable, fully equipped and nicely furnished. With hammocks to relax in, the river at your doorstep and the golden Sumatran sun, I couldn’t think of a better location to stay while visiting Bukit Lawang. Located just outside the hussle and bussle of Gotong Royong, a lovely romantic walk away from the action, Asim Paris provides a quiet sanctuary a stones throw from the national park. Orangutan Bungalow, hotel in Bukit Lawang

Featuring mountain views, Orangutan Bungalow in Bukit Lawang features accommodation, a garden, a terrace, a restaurant and barbecue facilities. Complimentary WiFi is offered.

If I could give a higher score than 10 I would! This place is in an unbelievable location, right on the edge of the national park. 3 days I was there I saw orangutans on the property and lots of other monkeys in the trees outside my balcony. Yes, it is a steep climb to get here but if you are doing a jungle trek you will need to walk up past the property to get to the national park anyway. If you arrange transport through them they will send someone to help with your bags. The food in the restaurant is amazing and very reasonably priced and there is lots of variety so you don’t even need to leave the property for meals! I got laundry done as well which was a bonus. The staff are super friendly and go out of their way to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. I did the 2D/1N jungle trek with Orangutan Bungalow and it was incredible! The guides were fabulous, the food was wonderful and we saw so much wildlife that it was almost overwhelming at times. Yes there are bugs and geckos around but you are in the jungle so it’s to be expected. If you want sterile accommodation with air conditioning then you will have to pay a lot more than you pay staying here. Don’t stay anywhere else!

We love everything about this place.

We love everything about this place. It's our second visit and I would come back anytime. The location is spectacular and the views from the room are amazing. Such a haven of peace and quiet. You can cool down in the river just in front of the property. The jungle trek is highly recommended. Such a beautiful rainforest and seeing orangutans up close in their natural habitat is certainly very memorable. The staff is also great and helpful. Rizky always smiles, Julie always happy to help, Arif always ready to show you the treasures of the jungle. If I remembered all the names, I would list them here too. The room is comfortable and as described. This place really is a gem!

I loved how the bungalow was away from the river and close to the park. Saw wildlife around the bungalow. I didn't like that I had to ride a motorbike without a helmet for the village excursion.

This is a very special place where you are close to nature. The hotel is very relaxed with lovely food and helpful staff. The owner is always on hand. Any questions I had were answered quickly by WhatsApp in advance. They even organised transport to and from the airport for me. My jungle guides were excellent and great fun to be with. They looked after me so well and made my visit to this beautiful and interesting place one that I will always remember.

Being in a remote village in the rain forest is the best experience. Lots of small restaurants family run to choose from. The sound of the river rushing down the valley was fabulous. The locals were all very friendly and said hello and waved.

Bukit Lawang's adjacent Guning Lawang National Park (home to...

Bukit Lawang's adjacent Guning Lawang National Park (home to wild orangutans, elephants, rare tigers and even rarer rhinoceroses) is a SEA tourist hidden gem. The tourist area is compact, facing the tumbling Sungei Bohorok that drains the park and hosts casual river drifts that are entertaining. The highlight for us was a guided trip (we used Sumatra Vibes and they were excellent) into the park to look for wildlife. It's a moderately challenging day even if you're gym-fit (and not recommended for the unfit), but rewarding when you catch a glimpse of orange fur high in the canopy. After minutes of scrutiny, you're rewarded with a curious look from a moon-faced orangautan (or her infant, if you're as fortunate as we were). Less challenging to find were pigtailed macaques. We heard but didn't see hornbills. There are overnight and even multi-day tours that take you deep into the park but we didn't do those. On your arrival day, if you are adventurous you can book a tour to the Bat Cave. It's only 2.5km of pleasant walking from the tourist trip, but the climb down into the cave is for the nimble and fit. Once inside the cave, there are bats, birds, snakes, spiders and plenty of tight spaces to challenge the adventuresome. (Our two adult sons liked it; my wife and I did half the climb down and decided it was too much. We returned to the departure point and waited.) The food is good and cheap, but the real stars are the locals: they are so friendly that they reminded us of Bali in the 1980s before mass tourism ruined the vibe. If you've "done" the rest of the SEA tourist destinations, Bukit Lawang would be #2 on my list after Angkor Wat for the adventurous.

Bukit Lawang is a very great village and I would recommend everyone to visit. It is not only full of very nice friendly families, but also a place to rewind and maybe catch up with some other travellers. Especially the Jungle Trekking and Rafting was a once in the lifetime opportunity. We got a lot of information about the jungle and its economics as well as great entertainment and food. I would love to visit again in future.
