Great city to visit if you want to hike up Gunung Ijen for sunrise. It's an icnredible hike, not too difficult, with some of the best views we have seen in all our 8 months travelling Southeast Asia. Banyuwangi was a very clean and friendly city with lots of cheap restaurants and we felt very safe walking in the evening. Stay at Snooze Ijen if you visit here!

Lovely wee spot surrounded by nature. Good food spots on the main route u to town and lots of rice paddies and tranquility out near Juda homestay. Very convenient place to stay if arriving in Banyuwangi by train

There are lot of beautiful things there in Banyuwangi: wonderful Mt. Ijen with one of 2 blue fires in the world, many beautiful nature both mountains, waterfall also ocean nature and savannah, cultures, traditional music/dances and typical food, etc.. etc.

There are plenty of lovely places to visit in Java and Banyuwangi is not one of them. However if you drive 30 minutes into the mountains there was some lovely homestays with views of the padi fields and dense forest which I would recommend.

Banyuwangi is one of the best place to be as it is not crowded like Bali or Jakarta or Bandung or even Surabaya. It is an underrated tourist destination which is more relaxing with much cheaper hotel rates and food. You can find Rumah Apung Bangsari, Bajulmati Reservoir, Baluran National Park, Savannah Bekol, Bama Beach, Kawah Ijen Sunrise, Blue Fire Crater, Jagir Waterfall, De Djawatan Forest, Mongrove Swamp, Mustika Beach, Pulau Meran Beach Sunset, Gandrung Dance and many more.
There are plenty of hotels and home stays and a heaven for culinary. It is the place to be and not in Kuta, Legian or Seminyak. Look for something different. Come over to Banyuwangi.

Lovely hotel - beautiful views over rice terraces and excellent pool. Friendly service and excellent juice to have poolside! Rooms comfortable, outside bathroom fun and spacious. Restaurant well priced, nice food - slightly eclectic menu!
Hotel about an hour from Ijen climb start point. We left at 2am (!) and they very kindly staffed desk to allow us to check-out and gave us a packed breakfast.
Illira is a modern hotel with comfortable rooms, nice views over the forest towards the volcano or the sea, and a good base to explore some of the attractions around the Banyuwangi area. Staff were helpful and it was overall a smooth experience. For early check in there is an extra charge, though they did allow us to leave our luggage securely at no extra cost after check-out.
Ijen Backpacker is 5 minutes walk away from the Banyuwangi port. You can stay here if you to do the Kawah Ijen trek. Owners will arrange for the trek and the morning breakfast as well.
They have dormitories and separate rooms as well for very cheap price.
The staff was very kind and helpful, room was nice and clean and it is located near the beach. We booked 2 nights and at the place we decided to add 2 more nights. It’s the best choice at Red Island.
