Customer service was exceptional, I can only recommend this place. Very close to city centre, beds are great, rooms are good, we stayed in an older room, still it was great, I can only imagine how good are the new rooms.

Pretty little town with lots of history. The medieval fort on top of the hill is a must see. The food is delicious at the restaurants and the price is reasonable. The wine cellars of Szepasszonyvolgy are a great place to taste the famous Eger wines. Also there are two thermal baths in town wort to visit. The locals are friendly and helpful.

Compared to bustling, diverse Budapest, Eger is quiet, relaxing, well-maintained and large enough for a good variety of restaurants to supplement its historic sites.
Dinner at HBH (Hofbrauhaus bavarian brewery) was excellent and about half the price of the also-excellent Forst Haz nearby. No wonder you need a reservation, though we got an outdoor table on 27Sept without one.
One can definitely use public transport to get to/from/around Eger.
We bought round-trip train tickets from Budapast Keleti station for HUF 11,320 (about USD 17 per person) for the 2 hour ride.
From the Eger train station, we took the 3410 bus 2 stops to the Eger central bus station (autobusz-allomas), then walked to our hotel.
The autobusz-allomas takes some effort to figure out, as there is no info kiosk or desk, but we found a good map (photos).
As seniors (non-EU), we paid half price (HUF 200 each) for local bus fare.
The highlight of our Eger trip was a relaxing experience at the Saliris resort thermal baths in nearly Egerszalok. We took a 1030h bus 17 minutes to its entrance. The spa facility was a wonderful way to spend the day (5 hours). USD 35 per person is a great value for natural and medicinal indoor and outdoor (heated) pools. My wife commented how smooth her skin was the next day.
It is sad that small businesses in Eger are struggling. I imagine it is worse in places smaller than Eger.

Whilst our reason for visiting was family, this was my first visit to Hungary. Eger was a wonderful start, the centre of the town is car-free and it was great to just wander the streets and take in the numerous historical and religious buildings and have easy access to good restaurants and bars. The town is very cycle friendly with good infrastructure and the traffic-free centre a pleasure to spend time in.

We stayed in Eger to relax in the thermal baths after a long holiday - just what we needed! The old town was delightful. We had the most amazing 6 course delicious dinner with matching wines at Macok, near the entry to the fortress. It was awesome! There was so much to see in Eger. Sadly we didn't have time to do it justice as we just wanted to relax. Eger had a lovely vibe and the town was pretty.
