The Stromness Hotel, hotel in Stromness

The Stromness Hotel is set in Stromness. This hotel offers free WiFi. Ring of Brogdar is 3.7 mi away and Standing Stones of Stenness is 3.7 mi from the hotel.

I had stayed at this property about ten years prior, and had not anticipated the changes that I experienced during my visit due to new owners. The hotel is still a charming early 20th century property, situated in a quaint village at the edge of the harbour. The changes though, are stark. No longer a little pub to grab a snack and a drink, for that you have to walk up the cobblestone street to another hotel. The breakfast is included, although everyone seems confused about it - the desk staff tells you to write down your breakfast order and leave it at the desk, but you arrive to the breakfast dining room and find it is buffet style eggs and such. Two of the staff members were incredibly kind, welcoming, and made me feel at home - the rest spoke in a foreign language and broken English when speaking to me, often getting in seemingly heated arguments with each other in front of guests in the foreign tongue. I arrived and found the window in my room was stuck in the open position and for two days I asked for it to be closed, as the evenings were quite cold, and no one would do this. But the second night, one of the friendlier staff members asked how my stay was and when I told her about the window, she immediately rang for a gentleman to go close it. I came back (from the other hotel for dinner) to find it still open, told her and she followed me to the room to get it closed herself. Note: not that they at all claim to be handicap accessible, but this hotel is not at all handicap accessible. The lift is too small for a standard wheelchair (it only fits one person with luggage, or two people with none) and the en suite restroom is not accessible if in a chair.

Lindisfarne Bed & Breakfast, hotel in Stromness

Lindisfarne Bed & Breakfast offers accommodations in Stromness, 4.2 miles from Standing Stones of Stenness and 4.6 miles from Maeshowe.

We loved our visit to Orkney, and Lindisfarne B&B did not disappoint us. Staff was friendly and informative, breakfast was delightful, and location was quiet and peaceful. We arrived on a late ferry, but the B&B is minutes from the Stromness terminal and they were ready to receive us in their home. If we ever return to Orkney we will be happy to stay here again.

Stromness is a beautiful sea village that is in many ways untouched by time. The people are genuine and friendly, there are ample places to walk to discover little gardens and views, plenty of unique shops. There are not a lot of restaurants in the evening, but the two that are actively open are fantastic and their staff will make your visit memorable.

Delightful small historical seaport town built on the side of a hill best seen on foot due to narrow Main Street with many small ‘closes’ off leading to the traditional houses Free parking available in port area and most of old town accessible from there - easy walking Museum is worth a visit When coming ashore from ferry take a break and explore the town - the history is amazing from Captain Cook to John Rae through to the herring fishing and the modern ferry terminal

The Pier Arts Centre is well worth seeing - awesome architecture as well as art. The Vintage Paper Company (Printing) is a hidden gem, and look out for Otto, the shop dog. The Museum is good to see if you are happy walking through lots of interesting old streets and want to learn more of the social history of the area,

We spent a week in Stromness which was a good location to visit most parts of Mainland. Stromness itself is a quiet town with limited dining out opportunities (book early to avoid disappointment). Getting a cottage with a view over the harbour is essential.

Stromness is a small town with an old world feel.

Stromness is a small town with an old world feel. It is a good location to get across to some other islands (especially Hoy, which is why we stayed there). It is also quite a good location to get to the major archaeological sites. The Stromness Hotel is the only large hotel in the town and this is a functional but rather soulless place (we understand the locals have tended to boycott the place since the current owners decided to make it alcohol free) . We stayed early June and there were only other 2 restaurants plus a couple of take-aways and the restaurants booked up really early (ideally you needed to book at least a day ahead!)

Stromness is a great base for exploring Orkney.

Stromness is a great base for exploring Orkney. The town is charming, with winding narrow streets of small independent shops. Eating out can be a challenge but the deli, bakery and small supermarket provide options for picnics. There is plenty of public parking at the harbourside.
