A departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centered around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.
There is much older history in the city center where the 15th-century city walls are amongs the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.
Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Center, while main street stores in the city center and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city has great theaters, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.
There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks is a historic site. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.
If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.

Thoroughly enjoyed my too short stay in Southampton!
Thoroughly enjoyed my too short stay in Southampton! Fantastic shopping centre and so much going on. Loved the street musicians and Christmas market! Beautiful parks and so many restaurants. Really friendly people too, especially those working in the shops. I came off one of the cruise ships. The port being another plus for the City. As well as Southampton airport which is only 15 minute drive from the centre! I stayed in centre and walked through beautiful park 5 minutes from the main shopping centre. Perfect!

It was interesting walking the old town walls.
It was interesting walking the old town walls. I also enjoyed a visit to The Tudor House which has a small tea shop inside. There are lots of information boards around the harbour area telling you the history of the area and showing some maps. I enjoyed visiting the Christmas markets at West Quay and Above Bar. I also enjoyed the cinema in the West Quay Shopping Mall and wandering around the shops there.

West Quay shopping centre OK if that is what you are going for.
Wasn't impressed with Xmas market - not very big and rather expensive.
