The Black Horse at Ireland, hotel in Shefford

The Black Horse at Ireland boasts air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi throughout the property.

We had a very enjoyable overnight stay at the Black Horse. The bedroom was clean, comfortable and the bed excellent. Breakfast is 'continental', served in your room and was just what we required (the coffee machine is excellent). Dinner certainly exceeded our expectations: the menu (taking into account specials) is varied, the food uniformly delicious and the service charming. The wines come from a local independent supplier and prices modest.

The complimentary breakfast was a nice touch, nothing fancy but perfectly adequate. Location great for the A1 as on it! The rooms are a little dated but as expected for the price so can't complain.

    The whole hotel was dirty.

The whole hotel was dirty. The room was barely functional 1 ch as it that was falling apart. The bed was small, old, very uncomfortable looked like it had come from Argos. No bedside table or shelf. The bathroom was not very clean pubic hairs in the bath. The toilet took 4-5 attempts to flush. Sealant around sink and bath had black mould. The general state of the hotel was thread bare and dated. A complete lack of staff. In fact the only member of staff we saw was when we checked in and then we had to phone a hnumber and wait for them come. To make things worst we had to for privilege to stay here.

The Hotel: It's a staging post, most probably for single travellers, handy if you plan to be out all day and all you need is a comfortable bed, a shower and a a cup of something in the morning. The cheerful adjoined Turkish restaurant/??bar has the same name but is fully dissociated. It opens as I recall at 11.00am so not suitable for breakfast --- altho' I didn't test that. There's nothing around but open countryside (and the restaurant) Shefford: I wasn't there to see Shefford, but driving through, it looks like a perfectly nice village/small town like very many in England..

Staying at the Black Horse was delightful with excellent fine dining and friendly ,professional staff. The accommodation was as described and although we prefer served ,cooked breakfast we were advised about the continental breakfast in our room so we expected that. The hot porridge on a cold day was a welcome addition. We wish it could be nearer home and we could come there more often.A good halfway meeting place for siblings.Thanks.

A quiet market town with a town centre steeped in 17th 18th & 19th century buildings. No amusement arcades or anything like that but plenty of pubs and restaurants. Cuisine includes Asian, Oriental and traditional English pub fayre, many of which deliver also. English chip shop and pizza delivery. Coffee and cake shops open during the day. There are branches a couple of national supermarkets and a petrol station. On the edge of town, near the rivers, there are nature walks too.

The White Hart is situated in the centre of Shefford and so is perfect for access to all local amenities. The hotel had a car park. The 'Doombar' was a good pint. The two girls behind the bar where engaging and seemed to love their work. Their enthusiasm for their work made the evening worthwhile.
