From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.
Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.
At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.
Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.
Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

A lovely little harbourfront with a lot of History, especially for our American Cousins (maybe less so for the Spanish ;-)
Lots of choices of things to do and a great selection of Restaurants etc. We loved the Himalayan Indian restaurant - intimate with great food.
The city centre itself is a little past it's prime, as are many older historic UK seaside Cities.
3 Days is more than enough to get a good take on it.

Plymouth has a lot to offer for all ages/family.
Plymouth has a lot to offer for all ages/family. Our favourite was the Aquarium which has an annual pass for repeat visits. The harbour, town, swing bridge and cycle paths etc all help to Plymouth's attraction.
There is a wide variety for eating out including fine dining. We ate at Miller & Carter Steakhouse one evening and would highly recommend them.
Traffic can be an issue. Parking does seem to be challenging and costly as some paid durations go from 1hr to 3hrs and the charging is 24hrs ie no FOC after 8pm etc.

We had dinner booked at Salumi which was truly another level then did a cocktail crawl The Treasuary being a great venu. I really enjoyed the trip to Plymonth.
I really enjoyed the trip to Plymonth. Nice city with a lot of restaurants, you can walk around or you can have a trip with ferry. Nice cathedral, nice parks, live music, concerts with popular rock bands or pop singers.
We really enjoyed the stay because of many aspects such as where it is located and how close it is to everything, like the sea was only a 4 minute walk and so was the tesco express. The hotel is very friendly to dogs and it is very welcoming. When you first come in Nigel greets you and answers any questions about Plymouth that you would like to know and also hands out a map to you pointing out the best places where to visit. The most important part is that you are guaranteed parking space for a very little price.
We are really enjoying.
Great location close to city centre. Would be good for a business trip A bit further to walk to attractions like Hoe or Plymouth Dome. Might not be best choice for holiday. Especially for those with reduced mobility.
Exceptionally good value parking - £3 / 24 hours for hotel guests. Very welcoming staff at front desk and restaurant. Very nice breakfast. Great location for Theatre Royal and Plymouth city centre and the Hoe.
Hotel is central to Plymouth city centre. Is within walking distance of the shops and restaurants. Still possible to walk from Hotel to the Barbican. Very close to the train station. Comfy beds
