Holdstrong Farmhouse, hotel in Lydford

On the doorstep of the Dartmoor National Park, 17th-century Holdstrong Farmhouse is set in 16 acres of farmland, surrounded by woodland. Its food is local or home-grown where possible.

Stayed here overnight and it was wonderful. We were met by Angeline at the door and she was lovely, she showed us around where we would eat in the morning and then to our room. The room was large and the bed really comfortable there was a small tv and lots of seating. It is decorated and furnished in keeping with the property so if you are looking for something all sleek and modern this is not for you. Everything was quality from the mugs to the bedding. The bathroom was small but the shower was really powerful. We had most of this side of the property to ourselves and Angeline was on hand but left you to look around and enjoy being on your own. The outside is as it should be in the countryside, it had rambling slightly overgrown flowers with bees and birds enjoying them too. There was a large garden to sit and enjoyto ourselves. It was so quiet and peaceful and at night you can enjoy a beautiful starry sky due to no light pollution. The breakfast was amazing, a choice of four cereals, tea and coffee making facilities, fresh orange juice and a compote of fresh rhubarb. Angeline served a piping hot breakfast all local produce and a selection of bread and bagels for you to toast yourself, all served in a special way on china and with all the old fashioned traditional ways it made it a real treat. Angeline was fun and more than happy to talk with you but at the same time very discreet.

Really great atmosphere, super friendly welcome and service. Great to be in a bustling pub with loads of local people enjoying a Friday evening. Nice drinks and a good well priced meal from a sensibly sized menu. We had a lovely walk in the early evening sunshine. Super Dartmoor views and good footpaths. Nice bright and comfortable room with en-suite. Easy access back to the A30 to continue our journey to St Just in the morning.

The Old Post House - Historic Dartmoor Home, hotel in Lydford

Featuring river views, The Old Post House - Historic Dartmoor Home features accommodation with a garden and a patio, around 49 km from Newton Abbot Racecourse.

A truly beautiful cottage that has an “olde world” feel but with every modern convenience and more! On the two occasions I have been in the past two months, always left with a wow feeling when first walking through the door. An excellent pub mere moments away and also fantastic hillwalking straight from the Cottage. I cannot rate this highly enough and my partner has us booked in for a third trip next year too! Do not hesitate to book here… the host is so very helpful and accommodating. A real gem in a beautiful setting.

Lydford is a small village just off the A386 to the west of Dartmoor and south of Okehampton. Probably most famous for the Lydford gorge but the village itself has other attraction including Lydford Castle which is actually an old courthouse and prison and mounds from the Saxon town. There is also an ancient spring and numerous footpaths. It has a traditional village pub and there is a nearby farm shop. From the village it's possible to see and easily reach the moor with its Tors and ancient settlements, stone rows etc:

Lydford Gorge is a wonderful walk,(National Trust) challenging for some, in parts, with narrow slippery paths, hand rails provided where necessary. Not difficult, but care must be taken at all times when near the river. The Castle Inn very good food and service.

Lydford and the surrounding areas have much to offer those who have never been before and those like myself who have either been before or worked in the area. Churchyards with interesting churchyards, monuments, Lydford Gorge. The space of Dartmoor for peaceful thoughts. Life is far too busy these days, lose yourself within this part of the country. You will return home feeling refreshed from visiting here...and have the need of a return.

The place was beautiful, and well worth going. The waterfall itself is huge and the walk around the trust is easy going and relaxing. Well worth going to the bird hide if you've got the time too :)

A epic quest through the gorge.

A epic quest through the gorge. Just enough adventure - well cared for paths, obvious routes, a map, but also challenging terrain, interesting nooks to explore and incredible scenery. Speak to the folks at the desk as they will give you tips. The devil's cauldron was shut due to off season renovation, so next time we go I'd like to see that - will definitely be back!

The property is very well situated, less than a mile to Lydford village but also an excellent base to either explore Dartmoor or use it as a base to do a variety of Dartmoor exploring and venture elsewhere. The property is presented extremely well inside, it’s homely, clean and the room was very high standard whilst still maintaining its charm. Even the scent used in the room was welcoming and fresh. The staff were so friendly, welcoming and only too happy to help!

I only had one night here but I loved it. The rooms, pub and dining area are full of character. The bathroom was really good with really nice toiletries. We were given fresh milk for our room and delivered more in the morning. The food and drink was excellent with good real ale on tap. Best of all, the hotel kindly posted a car key we had left in the room and we received it the day after we got home.

Beautifully presented barn conversion. Perfect for us and our 2 dogs. The wood burner kept us cosy during the wintry Dartmoor days and nights. Lydford is a quiet village, easy to get to some lovely walks.
