Dating back to the 16th century, this former coaching inn rests in the heart of the picturesque and historic Lewes. The The White Hart offers modern facilities, whilst keeping its old world charm.

Great country pub to hunker down in on a winter's evening, with very comfortable, well-appointed rooms above. We had a 'small double', but it had a super king bed and a lovely shower room with nice touches- fluffy towels, robes, chilled water and a welcoming bottle of wine. Exceptional freshly cooked breakfast in the cosy bar rounded of a great 24hrs. We're glad we booked the Sunday lunch on arrival as it was great, as was the Christmasy atmosphere in the characterful dining area. All the staff went out of their way to make it a memorable stay.

Small but perfectly formed. The owner has thought of everything. Also very peaceful

Lewes is a graceful, historic English town with a great deal to see and experience - especially if culture and history is your thing, but also as a base for exploring the South Downs, in which Lewes nestles.
There are numerous historic sites of keen interest. On this visit, we only managed the 'Charlestons' but both were memorable.
It's interesting enough to just wander around the streets. Brickwork and guttering nerds will be ecstatic! Watch the 500 year tradition of bowls in the castle?
We also had an intriguing night out in the Hillcrest Community Centre in Newhaven that was brilliantly different and entertaining. (With a good cafe)
What to look out for? Well... the pubs are amazing, too. The history is second-to-none, the folk scene and culture are brimful... Maybe just watch out for the prices in the posh shops, you might need to sell your car to buy that dress!

Lovely little town, many historic building in Lewes or nearby; great walking on the south Downs, or along the river for the less energetic. Good public transport links to Brighton and/or along south coast.

Lewes is a lovely old town.
Lewes is a lovely old town. We love the medieval high street and its historical attractions, such as the Lewes castle/ museum and the Priory. We also like the Southover grange garden, which is transquil and well kept, a nice place for a leisurely stroll.

So much history.
So much history. Loved the buildings, the motte and bailey castle, the priory remains in the park, the independent shops and cafés. Everything is within walking distance. Great to have a railway station and Brighton only 9 miles away. Superb views and walks over the South Downs.

Interesting county town.
Interesting county town. A few things to do inside there (eg castle and priory, Depot cinema by the station). Or excellent transport links to coast (Seaford preferable to Newhaven unless you want to catch the ferry to Dieppe) and Brighton of course. The self contained area of Downs to the east are my favourite. Quieter than the main range of the Downs to the south so you can just roam around and enjoy the peace. Or you can walk along the river as far as Newhaven but this can be quite muddy when it's been raining. Beautiful flat walk though if you go when it's dry, or don't mind mud!

I lived near Lewes from 2000 to 2005 so know the area. Am fond of the Riverside area with its eating places, also the High Street. Perhaps not a huge amount going on, and perhaps the "Information Centre" could be
done up/revamped a little more, but the town is in an excellent central location for a holiday spent exploring locally.

Cheap dorm accommodation near Lewes for Lewes bonfire night. Short 3.5 mile cycle in. Opened early so we could book in and get into Lewes before all the roads were closed. Access to farmhouse to add boiling water to my oat pot and a cup of Rooibush.
A really great little studio with everyone that one could need! Located in a nice quiet area not far from Lewes and near to bus services. The facilities were good (I had everything I need for a self-contained holiday) and the owner is very decent.
Great location in central Lewes with the bonus of a parking spot. Vicky is an excellent host and it was very easy to communicate with her. Very comfortable and spacious room with tasteful and modern decor. A real pleasure to stay here.
