I am very torn on how to rate this property. The building and rooms are extremely tired, as I have described in more detail below. However, you could see some effort had been made to replace the curtains and the bathroom was functional. What was the star attraction for us and a complete surprise is how amazing the dinner was. Seriously- the BEST dinner we had in Scotland. The owners son is an amazing chef, and came out to explain the different dishes on the five course dinner menu, and each one was perfection and presented beautifully. It was such a disconnect from the grubby surroundings that we really hope that the building can come up to par with the food. Even the breakfast was perfect, with a fantastic buffet, as well as a great choice on offer from the hot menu. It is almost worth it just for the food. The external environment, of course, is very dramatic, especially with some nice common area views, and loads to look at including seals.
Featuring its own curling ice rink and an indoor pool, North West Castle Hotel is located opposite Stranraer harbour, which serves as the main ferry port between Scotland and Ireland.

Whilst it is a very remote location and you are isolated from other places within walking distance, there is a costal path and tiny beaches to explore. We were staying for one night which was perfect, be mindful that there isn’t any other options for food eateries, the food at the hotel is lovely and prices for a 5 course meal super at £40, the main courses were a little high at approximately £18 and a little heavy if you just want a sandwich or a light bite for your evening meal, but fine dining wearing walking clothes was such a treat! breakfast was included and really hearty. The staff are super attentive and friendly, the hotel is clean and well looked after, very traditional setting and furniture so not a modern setting if that is what you are after. We wanted for nothing, everything was catered for, our room was upgraded to a larger room and was very traditional and comfortable. This is still a working lighthouse, which is incredible to sit and watch the lighthouse in action once the sun begins to set. There is also a upstairs terrace you can watch the sun set from (but no seating) and one of the rooms has a private terrace area (with seating).
Really loved our stay and would highly recommend it, especially for the experience of staying at a remote lighthouse
