Traditional/historic hotel set in the heart of town. Very pleasant staff, Relaxed ambience. Great choices for breakfast, i.e. 5 or 6 alternatives- we both had a different one in our 3 night stay and all were excellent. 2 evening meals here, both of which were excellent value for money, the second was a late Sunday lunch, not something we normally opt for, but so glad we did as the beef was as good as any we've had (and that's a lot).
Ample free private car park at rear.
Situated on the A170 between Helmsley and Pickering, the George and Dragon Inn is in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park.

Larger television in room than last time but no instructions on how to use. Food was exceptional. Very large portions. Ate in the restaurant on the friday evening Beautiful food. And loads of it. Good breakfast choice but got my order wrong on the Saturday I wanted poach eggs on toast. Was given fried eggs on toast. Friday breakfast chose the salmon and scrambled egg, that was awesome. Staff very friendly and attentive. Comfy bed but thin pillows. Room nice and warm. Good adjustments on radiators.

Nice historic town with a market square and good shops and cafes and pubs. The walled garden is beautiful with its nearby cafe, in the summer.
Rievaulx Abbey, nearby has a great cafe and gift shop. Enjoyed coffee at Porters and meals at the Indian Restaurant and Black Swan. Browns shop is a must for clothes and shoes.

It is well located for visiting historic places nearby such as Whitby and Rievaulx Abbey, Scarborough is quite accessible and there is excellent hiking on the moors. Helmsley itself has a castle and listed church and an array of small shops to explore.

Very quaint pretty town with lots of unusual shops, coffee shops and pubs. Offers easy access to other towns and villages and even the East Coast. However with being so popular, parking can be a bit of an issue. Can recommend The Feathers for Sunday lunch but be aware you need to book well in advance.

Hemsley is a fantastic little market town in the Yorkshire Moors, and not far from the Yorkshire Coast, it has lots to offer including, historical sites, great walks and excellent views, a variety of shops in the square, quite a few restaurants and eateries, local bakers, butchers, artists and a lovely walled garden with a superb ‘value for money’ cafe.
It is surrounded by lots of other small picturesque villages just a short drive away.
Well worth a visit.

Helmsley is a lovely little market town which benefits from a number of independent traders. Make sure to leave enough time to take advantage of this. Some delightful venacular architecture around the town just has to be studied. Don't rush around - take it at your leisure.
