NC500 without the hassle. Outstanding personalized breakfast with locally caught, fresh fish option (so much for boring Scottish breakfast). Extremely nice and quiet rooms (there are only 2). Access to fridge, extremely pleasant hosts, very accommodating and knowledgeable about the area. We were in Scotland for 3 weeks and this was one of the nicest, most pleasant, and comfortable BnB's we stayed in. HIGHLY recommended as is Helmsdale, great little town. Quiet with plenty to do, Telford Bridge, Telford Church, awesome sea bird watching opportunities nearby, fantastic access to the NC500 destinations. There is even a local volunteer run 9 hole golf course that we thoroughly enjoyed. Access to the entire area of the NC500 is very easy from Helmsdale without the traffic, noise and hassle of being on the route.
A good location for a stress-free holiday in Helmsdale, Song of the Sea, Selkie House is a bed and breakfast surrounded by views of the quiet street.

Great location in a quiet fishing village, right on the harbour. We walked a short distance into the village and enjoyed a locally sourced seafood dinner.

We liked Helmsdale and thought their Museum and Art gallery were well above average for such a small town. "Timespan" is well worth a visit. The current art show "Murmurations" was most thought provoking and well executed. The museum also explained the massive influence of the Duke of Sutherland, both good and bad.
The wee cafe was most welcome.
From the Monument dedicated to the emigrants, above the town, you get a great view of the surrounding countryside, and the harbour is worth a look. Take the A897 out of Helmsdale to Forsinard and the Flow country, it's well worth a visit to see this historic peat land.
The best location to eat, in this region, is La Mirage. Fabulous fish, but you should book as they seemed very busy both nights.

I am cycling through Scotland on a long bikepacking trip with my dog - so haven't spent much time looking around. I would have liked to visit places like TimeSpan museum if I'd had more time. Helmsdale would definitely be worth a revisit.

Train passing front of property was quirky and lounge comfy.
Wish we had of visited in the summer as it was cold in the property as electric heating was on a timer.

A beautiful little scenic seaside village, which has the main A9 road meandering through it. Easily accessible for all, with a train station too. Provides stunning views out across the North Sea, with the opportunity to capture some local wildlife. The villlage has a well stocked local Spar shop. Take away shops, restaurants, pub and hotel. All the necessary facilities for a break away. Only an hour drive away, is John O'Groats, Dunnet Head and Duncansby Stacks. All are well worth visiting, and easily recahable for all ages. Situated on the NC500, it's a perfect location both for exploring the village, but also the country close to it. Would definitely recommend a visit
