Stanton Manor Hotel, hotel in Chippenham

Listed in the Domesday Book, this historic manor house hotel is set in acres of beautiful grounds, in a delightful Wiltshire village convenient for Bath, Bristol, Cheltenham and Swindon.

This was probably the best, worst night I have spent in a hotel. The room was absolutely the best hotel room I have ever staying in for this price bracket. It really had the WOW factor and everything you could wish for. The bathroom, shower and bath were equally impressive. If you were deaf then you won't find a better hotel and room.

Overall General Experience If you want a couple of nights away in a hotel that gives you a warm welcome, where staff are attentive and want you to have an enjoyable stay, then this is NOT the hotel for you. The environment of a large old country house with well managed land immediately around and wonderful views West across the countryside cannot be faulted. The bed was comfortable, the four lounges have a luxurious feel and there is a collection of unusual items and art all around. However, it is the atmosphere of the house that is very particular. The very low-level lighting and dark colours of the hall, stairs and landing form the backdrop for large black and white sexualised studies of the female body. This, combined with the attitude of staff, conjures a pervading and slightly un-nerving sense of male power and dominance. • Generally, on the hotel side of the business (as opposed to the restaurant) you will be disappointed if you expect attentive and helpful staff. The feel is more of a place where hotel guests are a necessity, but are rather in the way. • If you want to read in your bedroom, bring a torch. On a similar vein, additional lighting will make it much easier to apply make-up. • If you would like to have a cup of tea or coffee in your room, there are no facilities to do this. If you were to bring your own tea, coffee, kettle and milk, the Terms and Conditions say that you cannot have your own food and you will be charged. • If you want to watch TV, then bring an iPad or laptop as a TV is not provided • If you want to find out information about the hotel, you will have to ask. No information is provided in the bedroom. Note that you will not be able to ring reception as rooms do not have a connected phone. • If you want to go out during the day, then remember that the main part of the hotel is locked mid-morning and does not open again until around 3 p.m.. You will not be told this and you risk being locked out. See below for more ...
