The Royal Hotel, hotel in Birsay

This was a great hotel that provided an excellent starting off point for our all day adventures on Orkney. It is right by the Ferry for easy access. The room was clean, there was an extra alcove for a second bed for our daughter, and the breakfast was great. The room was over a bar which was a little noisy on Saturday night but not excessive and honestly we were so tired it wasn’t a problem.

The Stromness Hotel, hotel in Birsay

The Stromness Hotel is set in Stromness. This hotel offers free WiFi. Ring of Brogdar is 3.7 mi away and Standing Stones of Stenness is 3.7 mi from the hotel.

I had stayed at this property about ten years prior, and had not anticipated the changes that I experienced during my visit due to new owners. The hotel is still a charming early 20th century property, situated in a quaint village at the edge of the harbour. The changes though, are stark. No longer a little pub to grab a snack and a drink, for that you have to walk up the cobblestone street to another hotel. The breakfast is included, although everyone seems confused about it - the desk staff tells you to write down your breakfast order and leave it at the desk, but you arrive to the breakfast dining room and find it is buffet style eggs and such. Two of the staff members were incredibly kind, welcoming, and made me feel at home - the rest spoke in a foreign language and broken English when speaking to me, often getting in seemingly heated arguments with each other in front of guests in the foreign tongue. I arrived and found the window in my room was stuck in the open position and for two days I asked for it to be closed, as the evenings were quite cold, and no one would do this. But the second night, one of the friendlier staff members asked how my stay was and when I told her about the window, she immediately rang for a gentleman to go close it. I came back (from the other hotel for dinner) to find it still open, told her and she followed me to the room to get it closed herself. Note: not that they at all claim to be handicap accessible, but this hotel is not at all handicap accessible. The lift is too small for a standard wheelchair (it only fits one person with luggage, or two people with none) and the en suite restroom is not accessible if in a chair.

Great location, and the space had absolutely everything we needed. The living room was comfortable and it had a full kitchen we could use. There Were two bedrooms with comfy beds and nice size bathroom. And we received a welcoming treat of scones, cookies, butter and jam which was tremendously thoughtful!

Scorrabrae, Orphir, Mainland Orkney, Scotland, United Kingdom, hotel in Birsay

Providing sea views, Scorrabrae, Orphir, Mainland Orkney, Scotland, United Kingdom offers pet-friendly accommodations in Orphir on the Isle off Orkney.

Patricia was a fantastic host sharing her home with us. We had a room with a double and twin bed with an en-suite bathroom with shower /tub stocked with amenities. The room had everything you needed; Patricia went out of her way providing large bottled waters, an assortment of teas and shortbread. There was a shared kitchen and sitting area, which was nice to be able to cook your own meals. We ended our trip a day early due to impending weather and a tight itinerary but this no-frills home provides you with everything you need in a safe environment. We did have a car, which I would suggest to anyone wanting to explore the island. if you are looking for lots of action and city environment, this isn’t for you. If you want a central and quiet spot, you’ve found it. Thanks Patricia; you were awesome! And I think we made the right decision leaving early…the wind and rain would not have made a pleasant ferry ride ( if they were even running!)

Located on the Orkney Island, 14 miles from Kirkwall, Smithfield Hotel offers 3-star accommodations with free parking, a bar, and a restaurant. Kirkwall airport is 30 minutes’ drive away.

The hotel is easy to find, right at the crossroads. We had nice rooms and comfortable beds. The restaurant was closed unfortunately, but staff warned us in advance and made reservations for dinner at the nearby Merkister hotel. Breakfast was nice and staff were friendly.
