Ardgort Country House, hotel in Castlederg

Situated within 21 km of Raphoe Castle and 26 km of The Balor Theatre in Castlederg, Ardgort Country House features accommodation with seating area.

We arrived on what was probably the worst day imaginable. Trees down, roads blocked and winds blowing at storm force. We didn't know whether to head to Castlederg because of storm Eowyn, but decided to take a chance late afternoon and go anyways. We eventually arrived, and just about everything in the village was closed due to the weather. We got to Ardgort House, and the difficulties encountered whilst travelling were soon forgotten. We were met by John, a real old school gentleman, who is a font of local knowledge. The room was warm and welcoming. We had booked a room with a balcony, but sadly it's the wrong time of the year to appreciate it. John appeared with fresh milk for tea. He gave some advice on local spots to go for something to eat that evening. The bed was comfortable, and the room had everything we needed. We slept well, and had an excellent breakfast both mornings. We headed out shopping on Saturday, and returned to find John had lit a fire in the lounge/bar area. On what was an incredibly cold day, reading the papers in front of a roaring fire was a very comfortable way to pass an hour. We were the only people staying on the Friday night, but I think two other couples stayed on the Saturday night. When we were leaving we spoke to John, who seems to be the only member of staff on at this time of the year. He seemed to be always available, and willing to go the extra yard if you had a request. He gave us a packet of after dinner mints, which not only is unusual, but a very thoughtful and nice gift. He even closed the gates at night to increase security around the property.

The decor was beautiful and it was top notch clean, the Ladies/owners were very nice.good music in the bar on Saturday night. The cooked breakfast was very expensive on top of the room rate, £10 per head, and the continental was sparse, no cheese or ham, not a great selection & cereal was scarce. Bedroom very small & nowhere to place your toiletries in the bathroom, no hot water before 8 am, rang reception twice and no one answered, pillows very soft, maybe one firm would be a good idea. Coffee machine in a very awkward place and no where to place it for use.
