The location is just something else. Nothing but amazing views all around. No matter where you look, it’s breathtaking.
Staying at a place like this for a while is what you might need to really escape the busy city life. The peace and quiet allows you to think and reflect, and find yourself again.
It’s perfect for a couple. The lounge is very cosy and comfortable, so you can spend the chilly winter evenings watching films/series while the fire burns. The bedroom and the bathroom facilities are incredible. A very comfortable bed and a fantastic shower - the type you don’t want to get out of.
What’s more is that there are so many places to go and walk/hike in the surrounding area, and you don’t have to go far. The highlight of our stay was the Haweswater Reservoir, just a short drive away from the barn. The views were unreal, and we walked the trail without another person in sight. It was truly amazing - though we highly recommend bringing the appropriate gear, like proper waterproof hiking boots, waterproof trousers and possibly gaiters, to ensure your feet keep dry. We were also incredibly lucky to have spotted two wild deer upon a peak near the reservoir, and that moment in itself was unforgettable.
And finally, the hosts. Caroline and Andy were incredibly friendly and helpful. Andy came by not long after we had arrived to make sure we were all okay, and Caroline caught up with us as we were leaving and asked us about our stay. Their hospitality really added to the comfort of the stay, which we were really grateful for.
One thing to note for those coming from the city, watch out for the tight country roads! Although you get used to them quickly, they certainly keep you on your toes, especially at night as there’s no light around other than from your car.
Overall, a 10/10 stay. We have every intention of visiting again :)
The Kings Arms features a garden, shared lounge, a restaurant and bar in Shap. Located around 36 km from World of Beatrix Potter, the hotel with free WiFi is also 46 km away from Derwentwater.
A Regency house overlooking Ullswater, the Macdonald Leeming House has an award-winning restaurant and views of the Cumbrian Fells. It is a 15-minute drive from the M6 motorway.

The road (4 miles) to Bampton from Shap is extremely narrow with few passing places here and there and has to be driven with great care because you can meet buses, lorries and farm vehicles. The road (2 miles) from Bampton to Haweswater is equally narrow and has to be driven with great care.

Haweswater Hotel is miles from anywhere so a lot of driving needed , as for all the Lakes I presume. Perfect if you want peace and quiet, great views and wonderful walks. Bampton village itself is very small with few facilities.

The area is quiet, accessed by narrow lanes all worth exploring . The hamlet of Bampton sold the cheapest petroleum for miles. Locals were delightful. Be prepared to travel for 30-50 minutes to reach other key locations in The Lakes.

If like me you are not a seasoned walker take the lower walk at the bottom of the reservoir which snakes around a peninsula and gives unbelievable views. Eat dinner at the Hotel during your stay the food and services are top quality. Weather permitting take time to have a drink on the seats at the front/side of the Hotel and just enjoy the peace.

Excellent base location for walkers who want to get straight out on to the fell. Haweswater and the surrounding hills are a perfect jumping off point for those wanting to join high street and other ranges in the lakes.

I’ve been travelling to the Lake District for years, and this is by the far the nicest hotel, best location, best service and comfiest rooms I have ever experienced. If you are at all undecided about where to stay on your next Lake District, and the Hawswater Hotel is available, book it!!
The staff were wonderful - friendly, helpful, responsive. And the location is lovely, with lots of walking and cycling possibilities, although there was no drying room at the hotel for wet walking gear.
