If you like a more sedate place to visit Appleby is recommended. Very picturesque high street (Boroughgate) and a Norman Castle at the summit which is well worth a visit (pre-book online). Ascend the fully intact keep to get some great views of the surrounding area and the castle courtyard.

Explore the whole village, as it is ancient (1079 ad). Castle located at the top of the hill. Lots of quirky, quaint houses. Picturesque old train station (steam train). Free overnight parking at the leisure centre - Need a parking disc (buy at CO-OP or Spar shop) to park for 2 hour free in the village or you "WILL" get a parking ticket. Local pubs & shops were all pet friendly.

The room we paid for was extra with a four poster bed and a bigger room, which we didn't get so we would like a part refund for the room we thought we were going to get, no real room to open suitcases and our room had flies in it, which the guy came and sprayed them dead, and then brought an old Henry vac cleaner to vac up the dead flies but the vac smelt so badly while the guy vaced up the dead flies our room stunk, luckily I had some Dettol spray with me, the carpets and windows were dirty and dusty, I get it is a castle but bedrooms need to be cleaned. No one to help carry our suitcases up the staircase. The staff were nice enough, eager to please.

Appleby is a lovely wee village with lots of old buildings situated in the countryside great for walkers I would guess The river Eden holds an annual horse fair for the travellers every June I heard which gets really busy with lots of fun to be had think it’s called The Washing of the horses an old tradition for years although it’s quaint there not much to do on the main st we stayed one night which was plenty but enjoyed all the same we stayed at the Crown and Cushion which I would rate 5 star this place is amazing for lovely staff price accommodation and food exceptional

This is a unique property from scope. You really are staying in a castle. You want to pass banqueting halls? Upground staircases. Along creaking corridors to your room. The view from my room was of The old Castle Keep. The castle is at the end of the road in Appleby, and it's easy to walk down through the grounds and into the town. If you just passing through, it's worth taking half an hour to do this as The town is very nice.

❣️🏠 This little gem of a cottage was a lovely place. Clean and tidy and very warm and cosy. The cottage had everything we needed. A real home away from home. The bathroom is stunning. I was so comfortable staying here and the bed is enormous! If you’re coming to Appleby then definitely stay here! 😇
