Sitting next to the River Eden in the beautiful Eden Valley at the edge of the Lake District is the majestic Appleby Castle.

We love it here, we came about 18 months ago and knew we had to come back for a night for our first wedding anniversary- really glad we did as it's incredible. This place is for history lovers, or people who want the chance to stay in a stunning castle - not people who want a 5 star manor hotel with 24 reception and room service etc. it's a huge place and full of history- there will be some dust and the occasional web but it doesn't take away from the beauty of the place. The reviews seem to be divisive but I think sometimes people go expecting the wrong thing.
Sometimes there is a delay getting in and out of the front door as reception isn't manned (they run this place with a very small team) so you need to be patient and ring the bell and wait, they will come and help. But don't expect to come in and out after 11 as the door is locked after that- so not for anyone who's planning a big night out.
We stayed in the Clifford Room both times which is stunning, a huge four poster bed and antique furniture. The bed is really comfortable with a great duvet and bed linen. I want to live in this room! The private bathroom is over the hall, this causes no problems at all as it's literally opposite and I wouldn't expect them to be changing the rooms in the castle to make way for an en suite. It was very clean and brilliant to have a big bath as well as a shower.
We had dinner in the castle, we both had great meals- the chef works so hard. The dining room is beautiful, you may be seated with strangers due to the nature of the long table but they space you out so you don't feel like you're hearing everyone's conversations.
The owner is lovely, she works so hard to run this place with a small team as it's absolutely huge and so much to think about. So glad to have the experience of staying here and would love to again if we get the chance.

The cottage is really well equipped with space well laid out. We found the beds and sofas very comfortable and the location in Appleby was great for us, easy to pop to the Co-Op for croissants, to restaurants for a meal, and for walks around by the river. It was easy to park nearby.

Clean spacious room, everything in room that you require, very comfortable bed and en-suite amazing. The breakfast was outstanding with quality produce used, the staff very friendly and accommodating. Had an evening meal in the restaurant with family for son’s birthday, the food was reasonably priced and off Avery high standard.

It’s up for sale and needs TLC.
It’s up for sale and needs TLC. The bones of it are great, the staff are unfriendly and a little weird!
Young lady waitress was the exception.
We had decided on the taster menu, it was not a taster, it was three starters a main and a slightly random dessert.
No alternative to mussels, which were tough, more deep fried cheese balls swapped in.
It was all entertaining, probably due to the amount of Prosecco we had… but I wouldn’t eat there again. Worth seeing the musty internals of the dining room and the very busy gardener who became the maitre de and then played piano!

A lovely village with a castle, river, woodlands, a great park under construction and a swimming pool. There are a few nice cafes, a couple of restaurants and pubs and some lovely gift shops. We ate at the 'Crown and Cushion' pub for a traditional meal and 'The Cutting Garden Cafe' for breakfast. We had a lovely stay and would definitely return.

Appleby is a stones throw from the Dales and the Lake District. The town itself is friendly with several options for food and drink. It does have a "small" weekly market and several independent shops. There are lots of walking trails and a haunted castle, a perfect hide away from city living.

We phoned up on the morning of our booking to confirm check in time. We were told they were cancelling our booking because they had no bed linen. They had not attempted to call and inform us. Be careful if you book this hotel
3rd time staying here and it's my default hotel/room in the area.
It's a lovely building with a great pub/restaurant a couple of minutes walk from the centre of appleby.
I've always paid less than 100 pounds for a garden queen room which is fantastic value, it's great having the patio doors out to the garden. Breakfast is Included and it's as good as you will get anywhere.
The rooms are always spotless and very comfortable
Cannot recommend the place enough
