Set amid the shops on Alton's main street "Not to be confused with Alton (the home of Alton Towers) in the Midlands" the Swan Hotel is a historical building that dates back to 1377.

Excellent location - very friendly staff (obviously short staffed ) but the staff worked so hard to help. Two staff deserve a special mention , the lady who coped with a very busy Sunday breakfast, solo and the young lady who rescued me from bringing baked alive because the radiator could not be regulated. Opening the window ( too difficult for me) and a fan solved the problem.
It has a very relaxed atmosphere and on felt welcome. Will come again - hopefully this year while Jane Austin's 250 celebration is still occurring.

We loved the decor, the cosy bed and tv set up. Most of all we loved the log fire! Host was super friendly and very responsive. Would definitely stay again!

Quaint old English market town with an oldie-worldie feel, old historic buildings to explore, variety of shops, supermarket, & pubs. It has a Saturday Open Market through the town on the High Street, ideal for a weekend get away or to use as a rural base to explore the surrounding countryside and amusements; the Watercress Railway is nearby as are many other interesting places.
Also, if like me you enjoy a spot of alternative live music (rock, ska, punk, funk or acoustic) and happen to be in Alton on a Friday evening, check out 'the lounge bar' on facebook, it's in the Alton Community centre off Amery Street, Alton - within 5 minutes walk of The Crown Inn.

We were just breaking our journey to Folkstone but it was a good halfway ( ish) stop and an opportunity to see Jane Austen's House as a morning trip before we set off again.
Jane Austen's House is about 5 minutes away in the car
