The Boat Inn, hotel in Aboyne

On the banks of the River Dee, The Boat Inn in Aboyne offers accommodations, a cozy bar and restaurant.

We booked at the last minute, unsure of what to expect. From the moment we walked in we were greeted with smiles and kindness. Our room was spotless, the beds were cozy and comfortable. We were late getting there but they seated us for dinner (which was amazing) then fed us breakfast the next morning (also amazing). If you are on the fence about booking, please do not hesitate any further! It was definitely one of our favorites during our 12 day stay in Scotland.

We appreciated the location, close to lots of hiking and Balmoral Castle. It had plenty of beds and was spacious. The owner was responsive and kind, especially when a piece of lost luggage was delivered after our stay. She was helpful in coordinating getting the item back to us! The house also had a clothes dryer which we really enjoyed!

Douneside House, hotel in Aboyne

Douneside House is located in Tarland, 31 mi from Aberdeen. Douneside House features views of the countryside and complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.

The grounds of this hotel are really incredible, we were "wowed" by the beautiful and diverse gardens and nice walking paths. Also a lot of gems in the area that may not stand out on standard travel guides. You can spend a day exploring within an hour of the hotel, very easily. We were in a separate building that was suitable for our purpose, but close enough to enjoy the main building. The main building has a very upscale feel, with a bar and two nicer restaurant options. Our rooms were more utilitarian, but clean and comfortable.

Aboyne is a delightful large village set amongst beautiful scenery. It seems to have a real community feel about it and the public spaces are clean and well cared for. We preferred it to the very touristy Ballater down the road and would stay here again.

We didn't stop in the town of Aboyne itself, but if (or rather, when!) we go back, we will do so, as it looked very pleasant as we drove through. The scenery in the area is beautiful, and we enjoyed our drives around the area. There are plenty of placed of interest to visit and a super-abundance of castles. We greatly enjoyed our day at Castle Fraser.

Beautiful place with great access to river and woodland walks. Quaint feel. A few solid local establishments to eat and drink, including the Boat Inn which has a great atmosphere and food/bar. A little scarce on eateries open later, particularly on weeknights. Most places closed by 8pm, although would highly recommend Nurtaj, the local Indian restaurant! Beautiful inside, lovely staff, amazing food. Aboyne was also a good base for accessing other places, with excellent road links out towards Inverness, Aberdeen, the Moray coast, and more. Not touristy in the best way. Beautiful place.

The Boat Inn is an amazing place to stay as well as for a meal or drinks with lovely indoor and outdoor spaces. Nice little play park for kids and fields for dogs to run around in too.

The hotel gave us the “I’m home” feeling and we had an amazing night. My partner went down on one knee and proposed which made the whole stay even better. Amazing views everywhere you look and the food was delicious. The young waitress was working hard and did an amazing job making sure we had everything we needed. I would definitely recommend this place for couples that is looking for a wee getaway. Spa treatment was nice to.
