Loved the Marche, it is the second largest in France. It is so worth going to. The town also is a lovely size and has shops, restaurants of all kinds. There are museums and Roman ruins, and Côtes du Rhône wine region right at your feet.

If you are travelling south in the holiday season, staying overnight in Vienne means you have passed the heavy traffic in and around Lyon. Continue your journey south early morning and be ahead of the traffic jams south of Lyon. Vienne itself is a characterful beautiful city. Arrive late afternoon (friday if possible)and enjoy an apperitive with the locals on the many terraces, there are plenty of good restaurants too.

A gorgeous town steeped in ancient history and culture.
A gorgeous town steeped in ancient history and culture. We went specifically to attend the JazzAVienne concert, to see Caravan Palace perform, and let me just say the experience was sublime. The ancient Roman Amphitheatre/temple pulsated to the rhythm of thousands of people dancing, singing and living in the moment. Would have loved to stay longer to explore the town more fully, immerse myself deeper in the provincial French culture. Definitely next time.

A really nice city just aside of the Rhone river.
A really nice city just aside of the Rhone river. Historical monuments, an interesting historical museum and many good places to enjoy a good lunch. During the summer, you can enjoy music in a real Roman theater.

Vienne is a wonderful town. Not too big but much to see.
Vienne is a wonderful town. Not too big but much to see. Easy walking to the sites. For a small town person, it is easier to cope with than a big city. Interesting Roman sites, cathedral and museums but none overwhelming. Easy access in and out of town so driving is convenient.

Well, it is an Ibis hotel, so very typical.
Room clean but basic. Our view was fantastic- roof tops and the castle. If you were on the other side, then the traffic would have been a nightmare. We got lucky. Did not have breakfast, as only stayed one night. Central to the old part of Vienne, walking distance to all the main sights.
Prime location fully equipped spacious apartment run by the friendly and extremely helpful Lola and family.
Superb access to the town and Train station to Lyon.
I highly recommend Lola and the Acacia as a home away from home in Vienne.
