With arguably the most impressive Roman heritage outside Rome, Nîmes is truly a sight to behold. Its most awe-inspiring structure is the virtually intact Roman amphitheatre. The gladiators are long gone, but a matador statue outside gives an idea of its current use, which is most celebrated during the annual Feria.
Another amazing Roman monument is the Maison Carrée, a colonnaded temple. The Temple of Diana is less well preserved, but still maintains some of its arched roof and interior details. The peaceful, surrounding Fontaine Gardens cover the grounds of the former Roman baths and still contain elegant water features.
Also water-related is the incredible Pont du Gard, a triple-arched Roman aqueduct across a river north-east of Nîmes. Other Roman remains include the Tour Magne, and 2 gates that allowed access through the city walls.
The Nîmes Archaeological Museum in the former Jesuit college provides background to this history and also houses the Warrior of Grezan, a pre-Roman statue. Another museum houses a fine art collection, and the simple cathedral is also worth visiting.
In addition to plenty of restaurants and bars, Nîmes has a good range of accommodation. Booking.com’s options include luxury hotels by Parc Expo Nimes, and cheap apartments near the train station, all easily accessible from Nîmes-Alès-Camargue-Cévennes Airport.
A wonderful city. Lots of Roman architecture, for example, the Amphitheatre, the Castellum Aquae and the Maison Carrée, are all in walking distance of the Ibis Budget Hotel. The city abounds with restaurants and cafes. The station is near the Hotel too and we made easy excursions by train to Arles and Avignon.
The airport is about 20/25 minutes by bus from the town centre, but the bus is very cheap and drops you about 100 yards from the Ibis Budget.
Nimes is a great place to visit

Nimes was unexpectedly lovely.
Nimes was unexpectedly lovely. In addition to the Roman sites it had lovely parks and gardens and a wide range of restaurants - from inexpensive fast food to Michelin starred.
The city was lively but not too busy. There was plenty to do during our six night stay and it was easy to visit nearby towns by train.

Nimes has an excellent condition Roman Arena and Temple (Maison Carree). However these can be covered easily in half a day and there’s very little else there of interest.
Good restaurants were hard for us to find.

We went to Nimes for a specific reason with approximately 30 friends to listen to music of our choice being played by UK DJ's so did not venture into Nimes. I must say though talking to others who have been to Nimes previously and have made time to go into the city it sounds like it was an opportunity missed on my behalf as there are some lovely tours to take and historic places to visit.

don't expect the usual old town full of stalls and late night shops----everything is expensive niche shops which all close early, and there's nothing to do except eat. but the roman arena is cool, the park is awesome, and the pizza place next to the arena is wicked

Only negatives were- no little milk sachets in room for the tea or coffee!! Plus, whats with the social problem in Nimes?? I was followed by 2 hobos and asked politely for money right bynhotel. Across the square from hotel there was a violent street fight by hobos, down the street one night there was a screaming scene by hobos, beggars abound. I was there 48 hrs!! Not one police person in sight. Everyone remains calm. Not good for tourism.
Absolute paradise, such a beautiful place. The hosts Philippe and Luce are amazing and make sure your stay is comfortable and relaxing. Luce is also an amazing cook (we had a meal cooked by her one night which was delicious!). The breakfast every morning is a true highlight (the best we had during our stay in France). The pool is just perfect and has stunning views across the gardens. We would definitely stay here again :).
I slept only one night but will surely come back. Highly recommanded. Friendly staff, good facilities, good bed and airco. And the rooftop is the max to chill out. Only positive experiences here. And Nimes off course is a relaxed city to visit. A lot of green areas with a lot of shade and interesting old town with lots of terraces and good honest local food. The real feeling of 'living as a King in France'.
The good location for those who arrive to Nimes by train (5 min walking distance).
The hotel really needs renovation which is currently in progress. During the weekend we did not hear any noise.
Warm enough inside the room in winter.
