Don’t be fooled by the exterior of this house, because behind the wall you will find a little jewel. The “Patron” says it is not a “Hotel” but a “Chambre d’hôtes”. The venue has only 4 rooms, and we hat the big one on the 4th floor. It is a very biiig room full of old fashioned charme, massive wooden floor, very comfortable bed, complimentary coffee, or tea and absolutely clean. We felt a little like the King Louis XIV! Toilet and Shower room are separate, they look quite new, and everything works perfectly.
Breakfast is in a little room on massive walnut tables. Breakfast (included):There is no buffet, but you get more than enough: homemade bread and yam, and some local specialties especially very fine cheese.
The patron Philippe has a hard shell but a soft heart: he is a mine of precious information; just ask him if you plan a tour in the region either by car, bike or hiking, and he’ll give you hot tips on the best way to do and the most interesting places to discover.
The venue has a little restaurant with a patio terrace, and you shouldn’t miss eating there. You will not find many items on the menu but a fine choice of regional specialties that will delight your palate, like Veronique signature dish, the stuffed cabbage served with charm by Melissa. A delight.

a great base for walking in the Cantal Volcanic mountains; a good train connection, good shops and cafes, and more than one excellent bakery, especially Au Delices Montagnards and Du Pain et des Jeux (organic); there is a good supermarket, and a market on Fridays. walking routes start from the town, and get quickly into varied and interesting countryside including forests, mountains, wild flower meadows, and streams.

Though the little town has medieval character, you do no travel to Murat for the town itself, but rather as a basis to explore the surroundings. Fist at all the volcanoes like the Puy Mary and the Plomb du Cantal or old towns and villages in the region, like Saint Flour or Salers (with its world-renowned cheese) not to mention the castles, old churches and little valleys dotted with farms, cows, sheep and goats. The region is a hiking paradise and good for biking tours too.
