The lace and fashion museum is interesting, with a permanent collection plus temporary shows, so worth a visit - although the lighting is horrible. There is a lot of beautiful 19th century architecture, especially around the Parc Saint Pierre and a number of unexpected murals on various buildings around the town. The theatre seems to host regular events, although I wasn't there long enough to attend. There are also several friteries around the two central parks - useful for a quick snack or a cheap lunch.

A great place at any time of year.
A great place at any time of year. Away from the fantastic beach and promenade, which is are great places for children to enjoy themselves and parents to relax, there is a lot of history in the town. The Lace Museum provides a valuable insight to the social and economic history of the town - and it benefits from interpretation and displays in French and English.
A bonus - public transport is good and free!

The development of Calais Plage is a great example of how a grotty port can be transformed into a nice resort. An elegant promenade with a clean white beach and stunning sunset views with many nice restaurants and sporty facilities ( skate park, fitness trails and innovative kids playgrounds) calais town Hall is an architectural gem and the whole coastline is stunning . We normally pass straight through to the ferry . Next time. I will nook 2 nights and relax and explore a bit more

We had a great stay in Calais!
We had a great stay in Calais! The location was fantastic, with free car parking right next to the Theater. The apartment featured a spacious dining room, a well-equipped living room, and a fully stocked kitchen, which made our stay even more comfortable. The only downside was the very squeaky floor, which was a bit disruptive. Overall, it was a positive experience, and we would happily stay again.

Calais has had a turnaround over last few years and now is a good destination for a short trip. Around Calais Nord the Port area is interesting even to non-industrialist types (!) Beach area is 'for the people' and offers much space, activities, eateries, bars as well as a somewhat surreal view of ferries going by. The Calais Dragon ride is very popular. Overall, a definite go-to.
Most parking and local buses are free, plentiful and frequent. Hotel De Ville is a beautiful edifice and worth a short visit, views from top of tower are amazing. Many more sites of interest are close located several are around or close to Place D'Armes. Loved the little Chipshop cabins scattered here and there. Didnt try the river boats trips but wished I had when I rested on the bridge by the Gare and one went by.

We were concerned that the Hotel might be a bit "basic" for the price we paid, but we could not have been more wrong. The staff were extremely helpful and anxious to please and the place spotless. Whilst the main meal was simple but adequate, the breakfast was to die for, a complete range of breakfast goodies, from cranberries and hazelnuts to grilled bacon, scrambled eggs and freshly boiled eggs, incl. a variety of breads and cakes, meats and cheeses. Would recommend to anyone wanting a stay in Calais.
One of my bags was stolen at Calais station, and the hotel manager helped me by lending me a phone etc. BEWARE of thieves at the station!! - this happened when I got off the shuttle bus from the port. A lot of unsavoury looking characters seem to sit around the outside of the station all day, obviously targeting new arrivals. Keep your wits about you!
In the hotel, you can open the window wide, which is great for air when it is very hot.
The bed was comfortable.
On a Christmas shopping trip to Calais and Hotel Meurice was an absolute oasis in the middle of Calais. Very friendly staff, a lovely old fashioned French hotel, good bar and within walking distance to the many bars and restaurants Calais has to offer. Will definitely stay again.
A touch of the old France comfortable and with exceptionally nice people running the hotel.
Perfectly situated near to the tunnel and a short walk to restaurants and bars.
