Avignon Grand Hotel is right next to the train station and just across the street from the entrance to historic Avignon. The hotel itself is nice, the staff friendly and helpful, and the rooms comfortable and actually rather spacious especially for the price. I had both a bedroom which could be closed off from the sitting area. I'd definitely recommend the hotel to others as a home base for exploring the region on train and exploring Avignon on foot.

I think 1 day is the right amount of time to plan for Avignon itself. I am a notoriously slow traveller (the one who reads every placard and can spend 30minutes in front of a single work of art) and even for me 2.5hrs at the papal palace, 1 hour at the small papal palace and 20 minutes in the churches was sufficient, plus walking around. But Avignon is worth a longer stay if you make it your base for exploring more in the area, eg Pont du Gard or Arles.
Note that the Papal Palace is an excellent experience without a guide. They provide tablets that offer a sort of virtual reality experience in a variety of languages. Plus they have French and English explanations throughout the complex. You can easily customize your experience to be as long and thorough or as short and sweet, as you'd like.

Arriving by car during rush hour was not pleasant.
Arriving by car during rush hour was not pleasant. It is a sprawling, ugly city. However, the old city is completely different, pedestrian and historic. We found the people to be very creative, from the food to the arts. It grew on us!

Well worth the visit.
Well worth the visit. Lots to see in this beautiful ancient city. We stayed for 2 nights which was probably the right length of time for a quick visit. Great restaurants in tucked away areas. The Popes’ Palace is a highlight but advise getting there early. The city walls are amazing. We didn’t pay to go onto the old bridge but there are better views of it from the river edge or the walk up to the park above the walls.

We were really blown away by this uniquely artistic apartment, and especially by the host, Cyrille, who was extremely friendly and hospitable and went above and beyond to ensure we had every comfort - including picking us up and dropping us off in town almost every day! The apartment is full of art and colour, and we were very grateful for the air conditioning, jacuzzi and cold drinks in the fridge during the scorching Avignon summer. Would highly recommend this luxury apartment.
Luxury feel and location. Great Host who is informative and serves bespoke breakfast. The structure is designed for hot conditions. Very Quiet and max of five couples. Electric charging point. Free ferry to Avignon ( 1 min drive or 15 min walk ) Great running routes. The wife of the Host cleans your room whilst you are having breakfast .A high range of extra touches. Very caring
