Sophisticated Angers sits by 3 rivers draining into the Loire, and the imposing walls and turrets of its 13th-century fortress are a complete contrast to the other Loire Valley castles. More modern tapestries are in St John’s Hospital, one of the oldest in Europe, by St Aubin’s Tower which was once part of an abbey.
