The real joy of Vitoria-Gasteiz is wandering unhurriedly around medieval cobbled streets named after professions once performed there. Stone buildings, an arched gate with a portcullis, and steps climbing gentle hills all add to the atmosphere of life in years gone by.
But that doesn’t mean the Basque Country capital isn’t modern in outlook. In fact, the moving walkway ascending a hill is a stroke of genius. The Europa Conference and Exhibition Centre is a state-of-the-art events venue, and Artium is an innovative collection of Basque Contemporary Art.
Vitoria-Gasteiz also has a fine art museum, near the Basque Parliament building, but the historic charms are the real draw. The old cathedral dates to the 14th century, while the new Cathedral of Mary Immaculate is an impressive neo-Gothic structure. Nearby houses have brightly painted murals which tell a story, best explained on a walking tour.
Porticoed buildings line elegant Plaza de España, and next door is Plaza de la Virgen Blanca with its boxed balconies. Pavement cafes and bars overlook the Monument to Independence, an event commemorated in a Beethoven symphony. A more unusual sight is the museum celebrating the city’s role in playing card production.
The Vitoria-Gasteiz accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels, cheap hostels by the train station and apartments near Vitoria Airport.

I visited two of the less-popular museums, and I enjoyed them greatly: Museum of Playing Cards (naipes) and the museum of natural sciences (which was small but had very good exhibits). Also the fine arts museum focused on Basque artists, something I have not seen in other Spanish fine arts museums.

A very beautiful historical centre with gorgeous murals and a lot of green in the surroundings. A relaxed atmosphere with several bars offering bites and drinks at a low cost. Locals may not speak English but are eager to help in a very friendly manner.

The visit to the cathedral is a must. Opt for the 1.5h guided tour (sometimes available in different languages, or grab an audio guide for non-Spanish options).
For bird lovers, be sure to visit Parque de Salburua and bring your binoculars. We saw over 45 species of birds in a couple of hours, and over 3 dozen deer wading in the marshes. Great spot for walking or jogging.
Also interesting is a short visit to the Fournier card museum (historical playing cards, tarot decks and printing equipment).
Book a table for pintxos or the menu del día at PerretxiCo. You'll be glad you did!

This is an awesome city, and I wish I could move here tomorrow! The medieval town centre is exactly what you would hope for in a European city, but it's also modern, with tons of activities and facilities. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous for drives. It's about an hour from Pamplona if you like running with bulls, an hour and a half or so from San Sebastián if you want to see some ocean, a few hours from Biarritz in France. It's a great location, great ambience.
Also...old ladies walk alone on dark streets at night. It just feels safe and wholesome. Kids ride scooters to school in the morning, you see families everywhere. It's very walking-focused, and you'll want to walk a ton, as you discover all the quaint historical buildings and small shops.
Make sure your hotel has parking, though, because street parking is hard to come by. That's literally my only half-way negative thought about the city, and this is now my forth visit this year.

In keeping with the great Basque cities on the coast, the old town offered great food/pintxo's but at more affordable prices. The city is beautiful and compact and better for not being on the main tourist trail. I would suggest Vitoria-Gasteiz is ideal for a short stay or as a longer stay base to explore both the coast and Rioja Alavas region.
