An Ancient University Town with Fascinating Culture
In the southwest corner of Castile and Leon, the Spanish city of Salamanca is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old City is one of the most beautiful Renaissance cities in Europe.
Right next to the Portuguese border, Salamanca has unique architecture including Romanesque, Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. The Old Cathedral dates from the 12th-13th centuries and is joined together with the 16th-century New Cathedral.
One of the most charming squares in Spain, Plaza Mayor is the heart of Salamanca and an excellent example of Baroque architecture. Take a stroll among the sidewalk cafes, cool off with some ice cream or relax in one of the picturesque restaurants.
Founded by King Alfonso IX in 1218, the University of Salamanca has more than 3,500 international students and teachers. Known for its Spanish courses for non-native speakers, the university houses a huge library with more than 150,000 invaluable volumes.
Booking.com has a great variety of hotels, guesthouses, hostels and apartments to choose from. Salamanca Airport is 9 miles away from the city and is easily accessible by public transportation.
It is simply beautiful. Old and new blend seamlessly and the river adds immense charm. And it is the greenest of cities I have visited in recent times, COVID aside. At night, even more beautiful. Wonderful place and I will return.

Salamanca is a beautiful city.
Salamanca is a beautiful city. I have heard it said it is the most beautiful in Spain and wouldn't quibble with that. It's a destination for short city breaks though, looking at historical buildings and enjoying the food. The historical centre is quite small so everything is walking distance. For Brits looking to eat early in the evening it can be difficult as most restaurants don't open until 8, but there were some that opened earlier in the Plaza Major, which must be the most beautiful square in Spain, certainly better than the one in Madrid. Compulsory places to visit include the cathedrals (yes two joined together) and the Convento de San Estoban. The old university buildings are well worth seeing and you can go into the ancient lecture theatres. Tucked away though is a university cloister with a room with a painted ceiling representing the night sky, with paintings of the figures representing the zodiac - just beautiful.

Salamanca is a lovely city, with lots of interesting sites to visit. The two cathedrals are gorgeous, San Esteban church with its lovely cloisters was outstanding, Plaza Mayor was beautiful and lively at all times of the day and night, the various university sites and buildings were interesting to tour, and on and on…. All in all Salamanca is a “happening” place!

Salamanca is an absolutely beautiful city.
Salamanca is an absolutely beautiful city. There is wonderful architecture everywhere you look. It is quite compact so you can easily walk around it. The Plaza Mayor is fantastic - so big and with interesting shops or cafes all around the perimeter. At night it is incredible, especially if you are lucky enough to be there one of the nights that the ‘tuna’s’, the university music groups, following an ancient tradition, come and play in the square. The crowds gather round and everyone starts dancing. It’s a magical place!

Lovely city. Plaza Mayor is stunning.
Lovely city. Plaza Mayor is stunning. Surrounded by lovely cafes. Also stopped at the cathedral for a few pics but didn't go in. Place to return to for sure. Hotel and restaurant (rooftop) was great.
It is very handy to break our journey when travelling through Spain - easy to get to from the motorway. Usually on street parking nearby, petrol station over the road to refuel before setting off again. And a short walk to the Roman bridge and the city for exploring and finding somewhere to eat. We had a lovely view from the balcony.
A typical modern hotel with all conveniences located in a business park. Ideal for travellers on the route from north of Spain to the south along Ruta de Plata. Reasonable restaurant with varied menu. Pleasant garden / terrace to sit and have a drink .Comfortable beds and good shower. Wifi throughout.
We had an exceptional time at Hospes Palacio. We just loved everything. The hotel team were so friendly and kind. Our room beautiful and the hotel in the perfect location with all the facilities we needed. We will recommend everyone travelling to Salamanca to stay and dine here. Thank you!
My place of choice when driving through Spain ! The historical center of Salamanca is just a few minutes away by foot, the area is perfect if you have car, the hotel is simple, they accept dogs and the restaurant/breakfast is really good with super nice service !
