When booking the property I got the impression it was a basic 1-Star. It was anything but! The beds were comfortable, the shower powerful and the restaurant attached fantastic. Some of the best food we had. It was great being able to park 10m from reception.
This charming coastal hotel is located just 150 meters from Salve Beach in Laredo and is set within beautiful gardens. The colonial-style El Ancla serves breakfast at any time of day.

Laredo has a lovely old part to the town with a huge number of places to eat and drink. There is also a beautiful Gothic style church with a Guide who speaks English. 1,euro entry. The Comino trail runs along the coast and through the town so is easily accessible.
Near to the harbour/marina is a tunnel which runs through the cliff about 200 metres. Free. There are murals on the walls of fish.
A trip to Santona by boat is well worth it as it goes out across the bay to see the lighthouse and along the coast to see the old Forts. There is also an excellent natural history museum which looks at the history of the area and the wildlife. Free entry. There is also a footpath where you can walk out to the Forts and lighthouse.
The Alsa coach service runs coaches all over Spain and are very reasonable, best to book online. Santander to Laredo direct took 40minutes and cost 22euros for seniors. The coaches have reclining seats, WiFi, toilets.
The area is very Spanish with few people speaking English but they are extremely helpful.

I disagree with some of the negative comments about Laredo on this website. If you are looking for somewhere which is very touristy and commercialised it is not for you. If, however, you are looking to get a genuine Spanish experience and mingle with the locals (a smattering of Spanish is sometimes handy) then it is a great place. The locals are very friendly and there are some lovely cafes and restaurants. A walk round the old town is very interesting, and you get a real feel for its history.

Hard to find somewhere to have dinner, pinchos on offer were limited. It feels a little jaded, took the short ferry across to Santona and it was a much more lively place, I would recommend going there.
The view from both the room and the terrace was spectacular! The interior of the hotel was stylish. The staff were friendly and despite the global wifi meltdown checked us in efficiently.
It's an amazing spot to watch the sunset and view over the city, beach and mountains.
We were fortunate to catch a local festival.
Family history of the hotel and Tour de France and merchant navy connections. It felt as if we were on board an old Union Castle passenger ship. All wonderful.
