When viewed against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains, Ávila is truly a spectacular sight. Its fully intact walls rise majestically from a hill, and the many semi-circular towers and 9 gates give it added character. Begun in the 11th century, these incredible fortifications are the symbol of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed city.
Partly built into the walls are the rather fortress-like cathedral and the Convent of Saint Teresa, erected in honour of the saint whose childhood was spent in a house on the same spot. Her relics are here, making it a popular pilgrimage spot. The city’s biggest festival is also in her honour and includes a colourful parade, fireworks and fights in the bullring.
Teresa entered the Incarnation Convent in Ávila, but found herself at odds with the practices, so founded a new monastery: the Convent of Saint Joseph. Of the city’s other religious structures, the Royal Monastery of Saint Thomas is particularly of note as it contains the tomb of Don Juan, son of King Fernando.
Other Ávila sights include the Torreón de los Guzmanes - a tower attached to the provincial council headquarters – and the Four Columns monument which offers fabulous city views.
The Ávila accommodation on Booking.com includes boutique hotels, traditional guest houses and cheap apartments near the train station.
Lovely old walled city in heart of Spain. The old part is not overly commercial - there are shops and restaurants/bars but also plenty of areas where the heritage buildings are the stars and have not been subsumed under tourist tat. The market Plaza is small but really lovely with several places to eat and drink. There is also a fruit/veg market on (I think) a Thursday. We drank and ate at the Vermuteria a couple of times which is incredibly good value for money - for instance 2 drinks and 6 tapas choices for 13 Euros. Walking the amazing wall is a must - its in perfect condition and you get great views over the surrounding countryside. We also enjoyed Saint Theresa's museum & reliquary - despite not being religious, it's a very interesting place to visit. Avila is a good base for other fascinating cities: we went to Segovia and Salamanca, both of which took about an hour by car and are well worth a visit. Finally, we parked on the road right outside the city wall. It was 1 euro which lasted 24 hours and even longer at the weekend!

I got in love with Avila and regret my stay was so short (2 days only).
Avila is located on a hill, so in general the air is fresh and it is windy, so you do not feel high temperatures so much even if the sun is fully operating. Avila offers nice tourist places to visit (museums, churches, walk on the walls) and I think also (unfortunatelly we did not manage to experience that) - possibilities of longer walks outside the town. This is a mountainous terrain and I believe there are tourist trails there. There are many restaurants and pubs there (incl. "100 Montaditos") and the food is good. I would be happy to come back there one day.

The old city wall of Avila is on a par with Carcassonne.
The old city wall of Avila is on a par with Carcassonne. Well worth coming here just to see it, walk it and be amazed. The old town within is still a living town, not just a tourist attraction. Stay at the Parador Hotel. It's garden is part of the medieval wall and a luxury hotel to boot. Unless you are not already "over" churches, monasteries and convents in Spain, then there are a few beautiful ones of those as well.

Spent three nights at Le Vintage over Palm Sunday weekend...
Spent three nights at Le Vintage over Palm Sunday weekend and was glad I did. Avila is an historic, walled town and best not rushed through on a day trip from Madrid. Le Vintage was the PERFECT location with my room facing the street so I got to see all of the action/processions on the Saturday before Palm Sunday and then again on Holy Monday.
Good variety of food for breakfast, served in an attractive conservatory. Staff are all very friendly and helpful.
The hotel is in a beautiful building - indeed a palace- and it felt very luxurious. In spite of this the price was reasonable, especially given that the hotel is right opposite the cathedral, so a great central location, yet quiet. Would definitely be my first choice for a return visit to lovely Ávila.
Very nice place with a beautiful view of Avila. About a 15-minute walk away from the town walls. Nice restaurant and cafe with reasonable prices. The room was very comfortable and warm. No noise. Comfortable beds and large bathroom.
There is a lift for the upper floors. You can park outside the hotel for free.
We were two Cyclists from the UK on a 1000km ride around Spain. We were guests in late April/early May 2022. The location was superb, the welcome generous and the rooms 100% as expected - Our needs are simple: hot showers and warm beds – both were delivered to a high standard – Thank You
Location. Nice restaurant. (Italian, which was a welcome change, and many locals use it.) Good view from room over a pretty little square. A little noisy at night (it is in Spain!) but very quiet once the restaurant had closed. Helpful with storing our bikes.
Great hotel in an excellent location for exploring Avila. We had a lovely suite which was so spacious, super clean and extremely comfortable. It was excellent value for money. The staff were very helpful and always in hand. I would thoroughly recommend.
