FAQs about hotels in Almería

The Moorish Watchtower

Almería lies on the Mediterranean coast of Andalusía, overlooked by the old Moorish citadel or ‘Alcazaba’. It offers sandy beaches, rocky coves, clear waters, and the typical friendliness of southern Spain. Its urban pattern blends Moorish legacy, medieval buildings, modern architecture, and colourful narrow streets.

It was founded in the mid-10th century by the Caliph of Cordoba, and was named ‘Al-Mariy-yat’ or ‘the watchtower’, as it was part of the coastal defences of the Caliphate. After internal divisions in the Caliphate and Christian crusades, the city finally surrendered to the Catholic monarchs a few years before the first trip of Columbus. A range of hotels in Almeria’s city centre will allow you to enjoy this magic atmosphere from a close distance.

The Cathedral of St Mary of the Incarnation was originally a mosque, and was built resembling a fortress, in order to offer resistance to pirates. The nearby Gata-Nijar Cape Natural Park offers beautiful landscapes and beaches. Hotels on Almeria’s beaches are a popular choice, while a variety of accommodation is also available in the surrounding villages of Roquetas de Mar, Aguadulce, and San José.

The city is serviced by Almería Airport, a local railway station, and a bus station. Ferry services to Tunis and the Spanish enclave of Melilla are also available.

Very nice Spanish city with a lot of things to do and see.

Very nice Spanish city with a lot of things to do and see. There were a lot of bars and restaurants too. They were putting the Christmas lights up when we were there, but we didn't know when they were turning them on, so sadly it turned out not to be while we were there. The little tourist train is great, 4€ and you get a good feel for the city and what you might like to see and do. The iron bridge on the front is interesting and you can walk on it. This will give you good views of the harbour. The Aalcazaba is an interesting building, please note that there are a lot of steps up to it and to each of the 3 levels. It is undergoing extensive renovations, so a number of areas are not accessible. When it is complete there will be quite a few paths you can follow rather than having to go up steps. We did not pay to enter but I think this may be because of the renovations. There are many places to eat and drink so you just have to explore the area to find them. People are friendy and helpful and they allowed us to use our limited Spanish rather than just trying to speak to us in English, which was good for us. We are looking forward to visiting the city again in the future.

It isn't touristy at all and full of English food restaurants, you can submerse yourself into the Spanish culture. I loved the Tabernas desert and if you are a spaghetti western fan a trip to Fort Bravo is worth it. It may not suit young people if they are after clubs etc, but if you just want to walk around sit in cafes, have Tapas or walk along the beachfront and enjoy the Spanish culture then Almeria is for you. However we did travel in November and the weather was excellent it might have a totally different atmosphere in the summer months and become more touristy.

The Alcazaba, Cathedral and Convent were brilliant. The Tabernas desert is a must see as well as the Cabo de Gata national park. The seafood in Almería is delicious. Public transportation in the area is not sufficient. Hiring a car or using Bla Bla Car is highly recommend.

Well we have been to Almeria many times though we mostly stay a bus ride away. It has got loads of things going for it in terms of some excelent museums/galleries and eateries. Also it has a lovely beach that stretches so far. We use the bus and train station, under reconstruction currently, a great deal. We are always a wee bit disappointed that we can't get to and back from more places in Almeria in a day especially as we are coming in from one of the towns where buses are limited. But it won't stop us coming back. We hate seeing the accommodation/conditions that people working in the fruit industry outside the city, endure. We wish we could do more to raise awareness and help end their exploitation.

We visited the Refugio Shelters underground tunnels, absolutely amazing. We also planned to go to Acazabar Ruins but could not find anywhere to park so didn't visit. The City itself was vast and interesting with large weddings taking place but all roads in the town were one way or exceptionally tiny sometimes impassable.

I recommend Almeria for a relaxing week, a city where the old and the new mix perfectly. Great hotels, affordable public transport, cleanest streets, walks, restaurants, bars and cafes, walking distance to the beach, a nearby airport, nice, friendly and helpful residents and a general great weather. You would treat yourself in this city for a lower price than in Malaga, for example, with fewer attractions but still enjoyable.

The hotel and our room was on the main thoroughfare of Almeria city. Shopping , restaurants and bars were in walking distance. We were able to walk to all sights and museums and churches and we are both in our seventies. We walked to the beach which has a long promenade with eating establishments along the way. Our last night was disturbed by many young people out on the town but we could have reduced the noise by closing the windows.

The hotel is comfortable and we loved our room. The shower was fabulous. Great restaurant attached although it was pricey. We only stayed one night which didn't seem quite enough either to enjoy the hotel or to see Almeria. Parking was handy once we identified it, although it required a short walk with luggage - we did not feel like physically moving the barrier to be able to park outside the hotel to check-in.

The hotel is located in an ideal place for sightseeing in the city. You step out of the front door straight onto La Rambla, whilst you are also a short walk from the Paseo Almería and the sea front Paseo. All the staff are very friendly and welcoming.
